| Replacing bathroom fan
During an unrelated excursion, I noticed that my bathroom fan vents into the attic of the house (lived here a year, never noticed it behind the insulation..). I am going to replace it with a roof vent and a fan from Fantech. The existing fan is an 8x8 square opening with a hideous nautical theme grille/light. What is the best way to replace this grill and housing? It would seem best if I can buy a whole replacement setup that includes, a new grille and housing minus the fan. I would like to avoid buying a new fan to only strip out the motor to free obstruction to airflow.
Where is the best place to buy this and the Fantech fans? Can I attach 4" ductwork to the 3" outlet from the housing?

| I don't know what a Fantech fan is, but I will assume that it is a remote mounted fan. If this is the case, then you don't need a fan housing. All you need is a grill and plenum type box to connect the duct work to. I could tell you where to buy this stuff here in Austin, but not sure where you live. You can check with HVAC suppliers but many will not sell to homeowners. |

| I haven't seen any that are square, though. I have a square hole in the tile, so I thought my next best option is to just buy a fan housing at Home Depot or something that has a decent cover, and gut out the insides to remove some airflow resistance and noise. It seems that is the only viable option here..

I lived in my 20 year-old house for 6 years before replacing the fan and finding that it vents into the attic - just like you describe. Grr. I thought about adding venting through the roof but I cannot see any damage from the moisture in the attic. I guess the attic is big enough to disperse the moisture. So I changed the fan and left the vent the way it was. |

| I'm guessing the inefficiency of these homes leaves enough heat venting in the attic to keep the air above the dew point. The company that did my roof agreed to come out and put a vent in at no charge for me, so all I really need to do is put in a section of ducting, and we're all set!

The only review I could find was in Consumer Reports. Their highest rated was Panasonic. They didn't rate Fantech so I have no idea how it compares. I have a few more fans to replace so this is not idle curiosity! |

| I have one in my Radon system, and another is boosting the ventilation to an addition. The ones I have are very powerful and very quiet, and they seem to be 'contractor grade.' The real positive is really that they are mounted away in the attic, reducing the amount of noise in the shower to the volume of your singing.

This is actually something I've thought about quite a bit....with a bathroom remodel looming over my head....but isn't there such a thing as too quiet?
I mean a little white noise can be pretty useful at times, considering all the activities that go on in a bathroom. At least that's my opinion...
