Nobody knows because only the techies are keeping track and thats because they are curious. Not because they are forced to like they are capped or something. The vast majority of people here will look at caps as a travesty. The common user doesn't know, doesn't care, and will never hit that threshold.

Ok, 150 is a good amount... But one month you go over and it's one dollar per/GB... That could be a lot of cash... This is not good... Why have High speeds if you're capped... You just get closer to the cap sooner... I will be looking for another ISP if this takes affect but it looks like they (the ISP's) are doing the same thing... ...

Oh I think it will take effect sometime next year. ATT has gone to a great effort to install a bandwidth tracking tool. Edit: The BUMT is a fully finished tool and not some experimental, temporary hack job for a localized bandwidth experiment in Reno.

Access to the tool seems to be a phased-in by speed plans with the fastest plans being installed first. The actual bandwidth tracking is only turned on in Reno. Probably as a beta test of the stability of the tracking system.

I think the only questions are when it will be turned on everywhere and will these caps be raised? As to the former question, I'm betting that it will be turned on early in the next year. Maybe the roll out will be staggered by regions or by speed plan.

Edit: If I'm right, then any user that believes they might be bumping up against the quotas or exceeding them should start self-monitoring of their bandwidth right now so that when the official roll out comes, they will be prepared to make a rational decision concerning whether to stay with ATT or leave. If it turns out that you aren't anywhere near the monthly quotas, then you would have nothing to worry about and this new policy wouldn't affect you.

Looks like AT&T is going to loose another land line, because if they implement an 80GB cap for the Elite Plan that I'm currently on I will be dropping both the DSL and the phone line that goes with it. I work out of my home and can easily use 2GB a day. Throw in a few NetFlix movies and I'm right up there by the cap.

Testing this in an isolated market like Reno makes good sense. That way they can easily contain the fallout while they watch forums like this spit and snort, gaining an idea of where to set the limits should they actually do it.

Here, 80 GB ain't going to cut it either. Assuming that they implement such a thing systemwide, they'll lose almost $400 a month in landlines, cell phones and DSL connections from this account alone. Not like they'd care...

Same here between U-Verse triple play and cellphone/data packages. I will go back to comcast and switch to Verizon for cell. Comcasts 250GB cap isn't set in stone and haven't really said how well it will be enforced. I am not even sure if they set a dollar amount for overages like AT&T has set for this beta testing.

I was able to log into that bumt site but nothing shows up and historically date dates to 12/2007. Which I didn't come back to AT&T till 2/2008. So it looks like it's been in the works for this long.

They wont care until they find out that they are limited.

I can DL legal HD movies to my DVR all day. There are so many ways that people can use bandwidth.

Aren't they suppose to have a stats on their AT&T webpage showing you your limits and stuff such as how much you downloaded or uploaded so far?

What about SpeakEasy? I think they are cap-free. Pricey though.

Yeah, but if a few thousand customers go - and they are losing customers anyhow - it might make a difference.

Also, as you touched on in another post, if the new administration starts to look at ISPs as utilities, there may be some regulation around this stuff. it's a matter of one part of corporate America biting the hand of another part. We have content providers pushing large downloads for access to movies, etc., and then we have the ISPs charging us extra for that. Something has gotta give.

I think these caps are unnecessary, and I have allready called and emailed AT&T and told them "if you implement these caps im gone" period. My Phone, DSL, and 2 cell phones that are out of contract will be cancled immediatly.

If they don't want to offer a reasonable service for my money, then I will simply find someone else who will.

Consumers can speak...if everyone would go 1 month without internet, and get about 150,000 to 200,000+ people to bail on ATT the day they release these caps, they will change their tune real quick

we as consumers can speak with our wallets. These companies are robbing us.

they get"hundreds of millions" of dollars a year from the federal government(our tax money) to upgrade infustructure....they also charge us a feee for the service...where is all this money going?

these caps are a scam, and if they implement them im gone..plain and simple, i have been out of contract for years so its no biggie to me.

I may stay "if" they set a cap of 300GB....if not, then im out...i would even take comcast over them..250gb is "reasonable" 150 gb shouldn't even be considered in todays intrnet.

we could fight these caps if enough of us would write Google, and Microsoft(the ones pushing cloud computing) and get them to back us...they stand to lose alot from this....these caps will hurt these companies like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and others who make up the core internet experience

we must fight these caps if you want a free internet...these isp's just want to suck more money out of us like leeches...they won't be sucking money from me that is for sure.

Economics is simple, refuse the caps, and cancel your service..enough folks do this, they will release it is not profitable and stop or else they will go out of business..its a simple concept..wakeup folks your being FLEECED AND SCAMMED!
