| Tomato/MLPPP overclocking Can someone provide me detailed instructions or a link on how to overclock my WRT54GL running Tomato/MLPPP M2?
Also, at what point does it help? I have a 2 connection MLPPP setup but am considering adding a 3rd line. Does overclocking improve routing performance on a 2-line setup or is it not worth it (yes, I do use the wireless with WPA encryption)? |

1) You won't get anywhere on a WRT54G v1.x, they're too slow and don't support the same VLANs
2) There's an nvram setting for overclocking, although I can't remember what it is off-hand.
3) Since you're using encryption, overclocking might help with two lines. Forget about using encryption and 3 lines at the same time. If you heavily overclock, it might sort of work, but wireless encryption is just too demanding. The WRTSL54GS would be a better bet, since it starts at 260MHz. |

2-enter telnet 192.168.1.1 (your router IP)
3-enter login and password
4-enter this 3 command:
nvram set clkfreq=xxx nvram commit reboot
This is the code to use for overclocking your wrt54gl. XXX is the desired clock frequency, mine is 216.
Mine as a default of 200mhz and I use 216mhz now. Seem to help when I heavily download and upload simultaneously. I disabled the encryption and only use MAC filter and low power. I think this is secure enough for common use.
But remember that overclocking your router isn't safe. It may fail to reboot. -- Connection: Teksavvy 12000/1600 2 line in mlppp - premium www.Globaltuners.com Remotely controled Radio scanner

Its not a security feature, all it would do is keep your average neighbour off the network. |

To all the others, thanks for the tips and advice. I'm not sure if I will do it. I kind of regret not getting a GS. It was only $20 more roughly. I was being cheap : ( What the heck, actually , maybe I will OC it and if I fry it there's my excuse to go pickup a GS! LOL |

currently my signal can't reach my neighbour, as we are far way, but it's good to know. anyway I don't think my router have enough left power to wpa2 |

 | by overclocking the cpu, would you not have to then actively cool it (or heatsink it) so it won't get overly hot? if so, how high can you safely go from 200mhz without modding it with a fan etc? |

 | reply to ultracat I can't seem to log into it via telnet, do I need to enable remote access? It rejects my username/password. Although I can log in from explorer just fine. I'd like to give it whirl.

 | I overclocked my GL to 225mhz with no passive/active cooling, but it doesnt often see load over 0.30. |
|
 | seems that some of the wrt54 models have their processors running at 216Mhz... not sure if that's the same processor as the 200Mhz version.. if so, then a 16Mhz overclock seems safely do-able. |
