WD My Book World Edition 1TB loses network connection?

I bought a WD My Book World 1TB network storage drive just over a month ago. I opted NOT TO INSTALL Mionet but just to use the Shared Storage Manager.

After several hours on the network if you try and access the WD Network drive I get an error saying the following:

Microsoft Windows Network : Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has been denied.

The only way I can get the network to see the drive again is to physically disconnet the power from the back of the WD Network drive.

After several days of contact with WD Support they said they network drive was bad and that I return it. Which I did and the new that I just got this past week still does the same thing.

I also have an HP Officejet that is on the network and I don't have any problems with it.

So I'm not sure if it is a setting issue or something.

I have a Linksys WRT54GL router Ver. 1. I haven't upgraded the firmware on either one. THe information on the router firmware doesn't sound like it will fix the problem. The WD Network drive has new firmware but I can't find what it fixes.

I am fairly new to home networks so I am not sure if I am just missing something.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Carl

Re: WD My Book World Edition 1TB loses network connection?

There are a few things you can check, but most likely, there is some issue with drive.

If you login to the router, you can check to see if the drive has an IP assigned. Assuming it still does, you can try to ping it and see if it is responding. To ping, simply open a command prompt window and type "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (without the quotes - xxx's being the IP address listed in the router). This will confirm network connectivity to the device.

How important is the workgroup name? The workgroup name on the network drive is different than that of my desktop and laptop (They both match).

Doesn't seem to make any difference on that drive, at least from your description. For PC's, if you have the wrong group/domain, you can't see/access the PC. But since you have access to the drive, and then it stops/fails, something else is likely the cause. But it won't hurt to change for your peace of mind.

My first guess would be a failing drive.

If you returned the original drive to WD...and they sent you a new one (and it's doing the same thing), why not try a different router?

Just for an experiment of something to try. Use the MAC address off the drive device an assign a static IP in your router's range/scope and see if it will remain visible across the network then.

I found the MAC address on the back of the drive but I am not quite sure I follow you on using the MAC address. I know you can go into the drive setup and assign a static IP.

I did try making the workgroup name the same as the 2 computers in the network but no success.

Go in to you router and use the MAC to assign a static IP to it within the router.

I looked through all the menus on the router and the only thing I saw about the MAC address was something called 'MAC Address Clone'

Sorry!! I just assumed that router had that feature. It is a good router, but apparently it does not offer that feature. I have just finished looking at the manual.

Sorry.
