In addition to what Red said, there's a lot more information one would need to determine your potential transfer rate. Is this dedicated Internet access, or do you share bandwidth with other users at some point? What hardware does your machine have, are you saving the data, or just writing to a buffer of some sort for a test, etc.
480mb/s isn't too bad, considering most situations. |

It also depends on what hardware the servers have. The servers have to have fast raid hdds to get anywhere close to gigabit speeds. |

Going off of the assumption that you're are one of the dedicated server customers with The Planet.
IIRC the 1 Gbps service they offer is not dedicated (Who can afford to at those prices?). You'll need, to factor in not only the other side's bandwidth; but that of every hop you hit in between. One over utilized switch/router along the way and you'll be grinding down from there.
If you want to test a file just to make sure you are getting the bandwidth you're supposed to, I can host a 6 Gig DVD and give you a link from a server in Dallas' InfoMart connected to Level3 and Verizon (AS701 legacy UUnet). With my utilization there, it would be a quick burst and I can easily sustain 1 Gbps. Drop me a instant message.
