Yes, you are correct when considering the toll or NAP.. However, there are different backbones that make up the whole..
As for instance, OC192 was the SBC data backbone feeding into Telco... Because of the FCC regulation on SBC in order to begin talks, and complete the Ameritech acquisition.. Basically, SBC had to split off its data side as a CLEC under the SBC umbrella.. We had to "compete" and "operate" in the DSL market just Covad or any other...
Given that Data came after DT, it is safe to assume, to a degree, they are still separate on a level. |

"Heres one that slipped through the cracks among all the M&A activity and FCC edicts this month; AT&T recently announced the completion of an upgrade to its U.S. core IP/MPLS backbone network, raising its per-wavelength capacity to SONET OC-768. Thats 40 Gbps, across more than 80,000 lit wavelength-miles of fiber, according to AT&T, though, given the carriers four-fiber routes, that number might come down to 20,000 route miles of 40 Gbps ultra long-haul DWDMthe largest such deployment in the world. This backbone is the transport foundation for all of AT&Ts Internet and IP services, wireline and wireless, for both consumer and business customers."

Besides, this has nothing to do with AT&T trying to compensate for over use. I don't believe that after reading usage charts of their backbone over the past couple years. As personal bandwidth increases, Bell is beginning to see the problems inherent to the marketing... The network can not handle the growth, at this rate, without expending 100's of millions of $$ made to pay for the initial equipment purchased to make this possible.... OC192 backbone just can not double without new equipment !! They have OC768 now, some links are still OC192, though. |

| reply to doesnt matter I am another that will also drop AT&T and possibly POTS as well if they decide to place usage caps. I don't want to worry that one day I might go over. Besides, this has nothing to do with AT&T trying to compensate for over use. It is more along the lines that new subscriber growth is down and they need a new revenue stream. It also stands to reason that in a battered economy, the may see a subscriber decline. Bad news for us all.
I think that AT&T should consider what they are doing carefully because all they will do is alienate users. It's not like they are the only DSL provider in my area. There are dozens if you look around in most areas.

The reason is that usage is trending upward, I watch TV using Amazon on-Demand with my Tivo. On average I download about 8-9 shows or movies a month between my wife and myself. We also watch things on Hulu, stream music etc... We started doing this about 6 months ago and it wouldn't surprise me to see more and more entertainment move this way. Do we want to be in a situation 2 years from now where good shows are available online only and 15 gigs each (Assuming HD movies or TV shows) but we can't watch more than 2-3 episodes a week due to a cap? No offense to the provider but if I was a telco executive and I thought I could get away with it I would enjoy all the usage fees that it would bring in so can we really expect them to act in our interests to keep the caps up with potential demand? I recently visited South Africa on business and the cap there is 4 gigs a month. The guys there were telling me that the cap was no big deal 3-4 years ago but as usage grew the telco had no incentive to increase the cap. I can see this happening here. Allowing A-N-Y cap is a precedent that leads to larger bills and excessive profits for the monopoly Telco's.. Additionally, it isn't like there is a safety issue, as with rev-limiters/governors on vehicles.... If I buy a fast car, it was sold to me that way... telling me I can only drive the Autobahn once a week is insane !!! |

You know i thought this was the land of the free...America and the internet was one of them..And now we are getting Bandwidth caps?? I mean i log online everyday and i don't have to worry about "Oh i wonder how close i am to my cap" but now...if this does go into effect it feels like i am being controlled by a company and i thought this country was free??
To be honest
I miss Bellsouth they would of probably never done this to us southeast region people How soon we forget about dial-up caps, eh? Ya know,, Thats not even a fair comparison.. There are way more dialup isp's due to the fact they call can be accessed over the phone line.. With DSL your stuck with your provider in the area.. And if they are evil, your cable option is the next thing and last for most.. And usually both isn't available.. Sure its a fine comparison. Guess who they all bought their PRIs from? Guess who they connected to the backbone through? They are resellers, there are plenty that do that with DSL now as well. |

I'll go to Charter cable the minute I find that I've been capped. Sadly, Charter Cable is also going with usage caps, according to their CTO:
"Eventually, we will go to a usage-based solution," predicted Marwan Fawaz, CTO of Charter Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: CHTR - message board), last month at the CableNEXT conference in Santa Clara." -- » www.lightreading.com/document.as···site=cdn I don't think that most of us are going to have any option other than to deal with an ISP who caps usage. |

| reply to signmeuptoo I'm another AT&T customer who without second thought will not only cancel POTS (I only got it for the DSL years ago anyway), but my highest (residential) tier DSL service. No, I do not abuse my service (I work in a datacenter - I have all the bandwidth in the world), but I will NOT tolerate being capped. Even though I'm sure I'd fall far beneath it, I don't want that worry. What if I want to throw a LAN party for a few days? What if everyone in my household decides to go on a youtube/myspace/whathaveyou spree that month? No. I'll go to Charter cable the minute I find that I've been capped.
AT&T, you will LOSE me (and several other people I know) and ALL my services if you put a cap on me. Even if it's 2TB. |
