said by rainallday :I'm still throttled down to 5.5 from the 6.2 that it was for years..Started around the beginning of November I think...Not a single change on my end for at least the last 2 years...I know it's not a big change, but it's a change for sure... You're not being throttled, you have some sort of problem. See this FAQ and post your modem stats here. FAQ:»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »I'm not getting the advertised DSL speeds. What's wrong? | reply to RJ44 DSL Sync is a Layer 1 physical characteristic.. Layer 2 is data flow, layer 3 routing ... Capping or shaping being the vendor(depending on which vendor) specific term within the switch provisioning and shapping being router specific to the RedBack, or "throttling" as the other chosen term can be done with the illusion of 3.0 Meg speeds.. However, sync rate and data flow are entirely different animals, as I can give you 3.0 sync but provision 128k virtual bandwidth on either the switch or router.... Although, the automated network audit shall correct this 1 way or another... which is why some people "all of a sudden" get problems... it is in the provisioning and the computer audit made a human decision incorrectly... |

| reply to RJ44 I am having the same issue. I used to get 6.xmbit down now I'm throttled at around 5.2-5.5mbit. I complained a few times and a few tech visit but they keep saying I'm in acceptable range and my line conditions are perfect. |

| Please ignore bell inside her's sage advice. Allegedly he is a disgruntled former employee. He solicits for help attacking AT&T through the FCC. Because as a competitor of At&T the FCC ignores him. Sad Really - he spent so much time in the CO. the ultrasonic overtones of the fans turned his frontal lobes to mush. Of course it wasn't apparent at first. It was only after they caught him sneaking down to the vaults to chew the cables that they had an inkling that something was very wrong. This went on for 28 years.Every so often he has lucid flashes and thinks he doesn't know what he's talking about.Otherwise he doesn't |

| reply to signmeuptoo Some of these "caps are necessary" posts are probably coming from AT&T employees. And for the most part it is BS. As I have said a million times on these forums for AT&T to see and read and I will repeat again exhaustively, if AT&T implements caps I am gone. I will not pay $43/mo for a service that I have to worry about that with. I do not abuse my connection. I only use it for what I need to (not hogging the connection all day and night downloading stuff). In any case AT&T will lose a customer who is currently happy with his service if they do this. Even though I do not abuse my connection I will not tolerate the caps. I won't hear of it any other way. |

Could you point me to one of those posts?

| reply to John Keels It sounds like you're someone like me who uses their internet heavily- but not abusively.
If caps are ever put into place, based on everything I've read, I'll still have more than enough bandwidth to keep me very happy.
I don't understand why you "won't tolerate caps" if the caps are more than high enough to satisfy your needs.
If they hurt the abusive users who need to download every movie available and share them with the world- that's their problem.
I there are ever caps put into place that interfere with my use- well, that's another story, and I might even agree with you. -- No good deed goes unpunished. |

@gnax.net
| reply to signmeuptoo I'm another AT&T customer who without second thought will not only cancel POTS (I only got it for the DSL years ago anyway), but my highest (residential) tier DSL service. No, I do not abuse my service (I work in a datacenter - I have all the bandwidth in the world), but I will NOT tolerate being capped. Even though I'm sure I'd fall far beneath it, I don't want that worry. What if I want to throw a LAN party for a few days? What if everyone in my household decides to go on a youtube/myspace/whathaveyou spree that month? No. I'll go to Charter cable the minute I find that I've been capped.
AT&T, you will LOSE me (and several other people I know) and ALL my services if you put a cap on me. Even if it's 2TB. |

The reason is that usage is trending upward, I watch TV using Amazon on-Demand with my Tivo. On average I download about 8-9 shows or movies a month between my wife and myself. We also watch things on Hulu, stream music etc...
We started doing this about 6 months ago and it wouldn't surprise me to see more and more entertainment move this way. Do we want to be in a situation 2 years from now where good shows are available online only and 15 gigs each (Assuming HD movies or TV shows) but we can't watch more than 2-3 episodes a week due to a cap?
No offense to the provider but if I was a telco executive and I thought I could get away with it I would enjoy all the usage fees that it would bring in so can we really expect them to act in our interests to keep the caps up with potential demand?
I recently visited South Africa on business and the cap there is 4 gigs a month. The guys there were telling me that the cap was no big deal 3-4 years ago but as usage grew the telco had no incentive to increase the cap. I can see this happening here. |

I'll go to Charter cable the minute I find that I've been capped. Sadly, Charter Cable is also going with usage caps, according to their CTO:
"Eventually, we will go to a usage-based solution," predicted Marwan Fawaz, CTO of Charter Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: CHTR - message board), last month at the CableNEXT conference in Santa Clara." -- » www.lightreading.com/document.as···site=cdn I don't think that most of us are going to have any option other than to deal with an ISP who caps usage. |

You know i thought this was the land of the free...America and the internet was one of them..And now we are getting Bandwidth caps?? I mean i log online everyday and i don't have to worry about "Oh i wonder how close i am to my cap" but now...if this does go into effect it feels like i am being controlled by a company and i thought this country was free??
To be honest
I miss Bellsouth they would of probably never done this to us southeast region people How soon we forget about dial-up caps, eh? Ya know,, Thats not even a fair comparison.. There are way more dialup isp's due to the fact they call can be accessed over the phone line.. With DSL your stuck with your provider in the area.. And if they are evil, your cable option is the next thing and last for most.. And usually both isn't available..
Remember horse and buggy? Probably not. Cars are nice aren't they |

Guess who they connected to the backbone through? They are resellers, there are plenty that do that with DSL now as well. |

Allowing A-N-Y cap is a precedent that leads to larger bills and excessive profits for the monopoly Telco's.. Additionally, it isn't like there is a safety issue, as with rev-limiters/governors on vehicles.... If I buy a fast car, it was sold to me that way... telling me I can only drive the Autobahn once a week is insane !!! |
