That’s 40 Gbps, across more than 80,000 lit wavelength-miles of fiber, according to AT&T, though, given the carrier’s four-fiber routes, that number might come down to 20,000 route miles of 40 Gbps ultra long-haul DWDM—the largest such deployment in the world. It is more along the lines that new subscriber growth is down and they need a new revenue stream. It also stands to reason that in a battered economy, the may see a subscriber decline. Bad news for us all.

I think that AT&T should consider what they are doing carefully because all they will do is alienate users. It's not like they are the only DSL provider in my area. Paying for a service and then the company deciding that they don't want to provide the service that you contracted for is quite another. When I signed up for Bellsouth DSL, it clearly stated that it was unlimited usage. Now, if they want to change it, that is breach of contract and I have no obligation to stay with the service. Of course, my contract length was something like two years and it has been fulfilled, but still, as long as I don't change my service plan, the contract should still be in effect. Those of us that have been with Bellsouth/ATT should be grandfathered in with the same service that we signed up for.
