Re: Bandwidth Limits - Meter

This thread is interesting but my question is the same one the thread originator had. Why doesn't Comcast provide a usage meter in their tools area?

Here's a FREE one. I just started using it, seems pretty good so far.

A meter is in development now.

Hi Jason. I'm curious as to if this "meter" is an application that will need to be installed on subscriber's computers, or is it server side based ?

Web-based on our servers.

Re: Bandwidth Limits - Meter

If you are a Comcast customer, then you already have a bandwidth monitor - in the free McAfee security package tools:Open Security Center/Tools/Traffic Monitor.

I don't know if this is a new or old feature, but I am amazed that there has been so much fuss about Comcast not supplying a metering solution. Apparently even Comcast doesn't know about it.

Re: Bandwidth Limits - Meter

That monitors the traffic on one computer, not all the traffic from the user's LAN.

???
I have DU Meter... don't need McAfee!
Would be nice to have something on their end to show WAN traffic only.
... not that I use tons or worried about it, ya know?

D-Link router so Tomato or DD-WRT won't work.

BTW, Welcome to the Comcast HSI forum felinis!

D-Link router so Tomato or DD-WRT won't work.

Why would DD-WRT not work? I have an older version that doesn't have a bandwidth monitor, but AFAIK, the newest versions do monitor bandwidth usage, from everything that's connected (PCs, Macs, Xbox, PS3, Apple TV, etc...).

Because it's not supported by his router.

THAT post is when I had a D-Link and DD-WRT does not work on a DI624 REV C router.

Since then, a *GOOD* friend bought me a WRT54G, flashed DD-WRT on it, and sent it to me.
No worries.

I have a friend who bought a brand new Linksys, flashed DD-WRT on it then sent it to me.

I have a pretty good WAN usage meter.

More than that - you have a good friend.
Me, I have a Linksys BEFSR41 which I believe cannot load Tomato.

Yep, I'd say he does too! As to your question: Tomato is a small, lean and simple replacement firmware for Linksys' WRT54G/GL/GS, Buffalo WHR-G54S/WHR-HP-G54 and other Broadcom-based routers.

I have a 54GL v1.1 and Tomato works pretty good with it. I'd advice you checking into one of the ones listed.

Re: Bandwidth Limits - Meter

I have Tomato, too. Works great to keep the usage within the acceptable level, now that we have a clear number to compare to.
Highly recommended. Much better than the CC provided counter.

I also have a WRT54G V5, and Tomato guys state "This will not work on Linksys WRT54G/GS v5 or newer WRT54G/GS routers."

So one router is too old, the other too new. With both working just fine, I'm hard pressed to spend another $40 or so to get another one just to run Tomato. I doubt I'm anywhere near the 250GB cap, and am not bitching about the cap per se, just repeating that Comcast has an obligation to deliver on its meter promise.

$40 I believe would be worthwhile for peace of mind. In my case, my router worked with Tomato and definitely is better to have a good counter than the scientific method I had before.

Any news on this meter? My main problem is my main computer is my laptop, which I take to work, so short of starting the meter when I get home, stopping when I'm at work, etc isn't really too reliable.
