hypersurf1 : I found out why its happening. Turns out that Vudu uses P2P technology so that users distribute to other users. Depending on your bandwidth setting determines how fast you serve to others. The 4megabit setting serves up to 300kilobits, the 2 megabit setting 200kilobits, and the 1megabit setting serves at 100kilobits. I changed mine from 4mb to 1mb when im not using it so the bandwidth usage is a third of what it was. If that doesnt do it i will have to unplug it when its not in use so i dont hit my comcast cap.

chipshot : According to the Vudu FAQs, it only updates the movie catalog weekly and it does software updates as needed. I would contact vudu directly and ask them if there's any reason you should be seeing 5 gigs/day.

FYI, here's an article about the service from nytimes if anybody out there is wondering what OP is talking about:

--
Eschew obfuscation.

[Help] Vudu

hypersurf1 : I recently (two weeks ago) got a Vudu box from Best Buy. The 1080P movie quality is great and the selection of movies is pretty good. One concern I have is the amount of bandwidth this thing gobbles. I understand the HD movies are over several gigs each but the box seems to be constantly updating its "catalog" to the tune of over 5 gigs a day without even watching movies. My provider Comcast only allows 250 gigabytes a month before they boot you from the network. Does anyone else have a Vudu box and noticed the high bandwidth it uses? I am wondering if it will always eat bandwidth like this? I might have to unplug it from the network when I start nearing my montly bandwidth allotment.
