Need a budget upgrade

I have a Hp Pavilion a1410n. I think the motherboard stopped functioning properly. And the processor is messed up. I still have 1 gig of ddr 3200 ram and a ide HD in it though. So what can I possibly fit into this case?

I am looking to spend $100-150 for the mobo and cpu.

Here is a link with all the specs of this computer: »h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu···=1841799

Re: Need a budget upgrade

If you are looking for both a motherboard and CPU you can probabaly find a combo deal over at Newegg.com for cheap. Socket 939 is obsolete though so I wouldnt go looking for that. You'll want Socket AM2, AM2+ (AMD) or Socet LGA775 (Intel).

You might also have problems with your OS since the HP recovery disc set wont work after you replace the motherboard. Once the motherboard is swapped you technically cannot legally use the OEM OS but you might be able to get it to work anyway.

I can't find any of those combos below $120. And so far.. most of them have reviews that are ALRIGHT.

Considering I need a very basic computer thats for internet surfing and word typing.. I think I can go with a amd x2 3800+

I am wondering about the mobo though.. what should I get? Don't need anything special. Just as long it's reliable and cheap.

And how do I go about making sure the new mobo will fit in the hp case?

oh forgot.. the new mobo needs to be able to hook up my old ide hd and use my pc 3200 memory on it too.

By the way.. I have a clean version of XP I can install if I need to.

Re: Need a budget upgrade

If you use PC3200 DDR1 RAM then you will need a S939 motherboard. Your old motherboard is an ASUS A8N-LA (Nagami2L) like this:

AMD no longer sells S939 chips though so good luck in finding one. You're probably better off going with AM2, AM2+ or LGA775. you're tring to match RAM to motherboard and CPU and it should be the other way around. Or you could just save for a new PC. HP has some nice entry level desktop systems starting at $349.99.

Re: Need a budget upgrade

There is a combo deal for the ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus and RETAIL AMD Athlon X2 4850e for $96.98 »www.newegg.com/Product/ProductCo···0&page=1 so the OP doesn't need to buy a separate heatsink.

If OP moves to Vista in the future 2GB is a better fit than 1GB plus memory is dirt cheap nowadays. CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) $15 after 30 MIR (rebate good for orders til Nov 15). »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···20145034

That sounds great. I think I'll go with that combo deal and the 2gb ram. The mobo will drop right into this hp case? And the old PS will plug into the new mobo fine?

In terms of connectors you should be fine. Do you know why your existing system went south? If you suspect at all the reason is a poor PSU I'd upgrade that as well.

The computer would turn on, but there was no video signal. The CPU is also toast.

Ok so last question. I should not have any problems dropping the new Asus M2N-MX motherboard in my hp oem case, right?

I just want to make sure everything is compatible and fits before I buy it. I am ready to order though.

Re: Need a budget upgrade

It should fit in the HP case fine. However, if video is the only issue then you might only need to add a video card. since the OEM HP installed ASUS A8N-LA has on-board video a PCIe video card might do the trick. But then again it could be something else too.

Well the person I got it from said it stopped working after it had shut off several times during storm surges. I am afraid something went toast. I guess they learnt the hard way not to turn a computer on during bad storms. In any case.. the processor is guaranteed to be toast so, I think it's reasonable to upgrade something better while at it.

I just hope all of it will be able to fit fine when I get the stuff. Anyways, thanks a lot!

Re: Need a budget upgrade

Well in a case like that I would test each part individually before reusing any component other then the case. The issue there is that you just dont know what works and what doesn't.

The computer had no external video card. It was onboard and it would give absolutely no signal no matter what.

you need to check the power supply before doing anything.

if the PSU is OK and you cant check the CPU or mobo independently then just buy that cheap combo. its a great price.

if you install a new mobo/cpu/ram into a PC with a bad PSU it will probably fry the new shit, too. Power supply is the most crucial part of a computer and oem brands like HP and Dell use relatively crappy power supplies in their computers.

Re: Need a budget upgrade

open up the case and look how watts it have. Depending if you buy a graphics card, you want atleast 450 to 500 watts.

here are popular power supplies
