| reply to Arbalister Re: Maitence on WOLTK release? FO PA!
Bah... I played LoTRO for a bit... couldn't get into it.
It probably is a great game... but lets face it, WoW entered the MMO market strong, its got people addicted to it's playstyle, and people don't like change... I think one of the huge reasons the past MMOs have failed, is because people not wiling to part with WoW, except a select few. I think blizz earnings showed that 80-90% of people who quit and put WAR, LOTRO, or AoC down as the reason... have already returned (pre expac).
Just too used to wow :\ |

I think blizz earnings showed that 80-90% of people who quit and put WAR, LOTRO, or AoC down as the reason... have already returned (pre expac). Just too used to wow :\ WoW had a strong entry because of blizzard.net. They already had large installed base of online gamers. And a large installed base of Warcraft players. It was an advantage that most other companies in the MMO market didn't have.
Turbine has a large installed base of AC, AC2, DDO players. Admittedly not to the degree that Blizzard had, but a good enough base to maintain a 3rd MMO. Lotro is firmly ensconced as the second largest North American MMO - and it's looking at something like a 3rd Game of the Year win with MoM's launch.
WAR and AoC were doomed from the start. :-P WAR because it's an EA product put out by Mythic Entertaiment. If you don't see a problem there, look back at Star Wars Galaxies. One might think that Mythic would be a moderating influence on EA, but..well...I beta'd DaoC, and actually contributed to it's strat guide. Mythic wasn't the most savvy company to ever put out an MMO.
But they *were* much wiser in comparison to Funcom, producers of Age of Conan, whose beta version of AoC was so unstable and bug ridden that launching a beta caused them to postpone the game for more then a year. Funcom has a crappy MMO track record, starting at Abomination ... er ... Anarchy Online - which I was also a tester for ... briefly.
Funny thing is that when I started playing WoW, back in it's beta, I only did so as a filler game waiting for Lotro. Back then there were many, many elements of the game that were clearly lifted from other MMO's such as Asheron's Call 2 and SWG, even EQ. *Now* when we get new people into the LOTRO forums, many of them say things like "stolen from WoW" about features that were a staple in MMO's long before WoW. :-P And of course, the current WoW expansion includes a good few LOTRO innovations. :-P
Personally, the biggest difference between the 2, in my not so humble opinion, is that the graphics are a more cartoon style in WoW, and the storylines are different. Many features in both games cross over. I just like the storyline in Lotro better, and prefer the more realistic, card destroying graphics in LOTRO. |

You can't tell me the people inside the organization aren't aware of the importance of this day to a large number of their clients (and any other ISP really). Wow! (no pun intended).. You cannot be serious! |

| reply to Arbalister Agreed, most of the mmos are pretty simular. Takes a bit more then a name to back up a game though, (Though EA being involved these days usually calls a lot of people in for a boycott :\)
I played LOTRO for a bit... went back to WoW. I guess, I realize I'm addicted to WoW...and while LOTRO could be fun, I don't want to be addicted to 2 games! And I'm a bit of a perfectionist... I like knowing all the inns/outs of games, I cant see myself getting that into LOTRO to do that, so I'm just sticking to WoW (Though with the way blizz has a new outlook on casuals... I'm thinking of quitting soon, the games way too easy now, and it just keeps getting easier...)
LoTR seems to have a more mature playerbase, I guess thats one of the benefits of not having 10 million people playing the game >_ |

| Realised it when talking with Marc earlier, when he mentioned he was heading to Toronto tomorrow.... Otherwise, I don't get involved in their maintenance scheduling.
Would have said something sooner otherwise... Sorry!

| reply to morisato Thanks Mori, I needed this thread
For those interested, I know Mori personally hehe. I also have a son that's a WoW fan (who just got his expansion as well).
Me, I can't see the attraction of online games. Don't hate em, just don't like em. And certainly can't picture doing ANYthing for several hours every friggin day of the week month after month.
Then again, people think I'm weird for watching so much anime.
Big fan of life here though, not that I have much of one (disabled does that to ya). The most important thing in my day is playing with my wife (no waiting for patches to install before I can play with her either ).
But fortunately all the games I play are old low tech designs that don't even have a problem with 98SE Steel Panthers FTW. |

| Over a decade old too. And more or less completely unsupported by most things these days. Firefox 3 doesn't support it, new hardware doesn't have drivers, Media Player Classic doesn't support it in newer versions (I think)...
I can't think of any good reasons not to be running at least 2000 or XP these days, unless you're so poor you can't afford to spend $200-300 on a newer PC. I was pricing out dual-core computers for screenings that were capable of playing back 720p h.264 content, and I came to $267 with mouse/keyboard (without monitor)... |
