| reply to caddyroger said by caddyroger : Are there a device that will separate a fax from a voice line and send it to the proper machine. Yes, there are devices you can buy that claim to do that. BUT...
1) All of these devices suffer from the problem that the device can't tell if it's a fax or a human without answering the call. Which also means that by the time the device knows its not a fax, it has already "answered" the call from someone trying to talk voice to you. Which means that you will annoy (voice) callers who wonder why you "answered" the call, only to not talk to them. Now you can sort-of get around this, by having the device send human callers to an "answering machine", but that's less than ideal.
2) And these devices also fail to accept faxes from some fax machines. i.e. Any fax machine that doesn't initially send the fax tones (and yes, there are some out there), won't be recognized by the automatic "fax switch" (and will instead try to treat such fax machines as as if they were a human calling you).
IMHO you are just better off, all around, having a dedicated fax number, if you want inbound faxes. If running a dedicated "phone line" (or possibly a dedicated number using "distinctive ring") is too costly for your level of faxes, do what I do and sign up for a fax to email service (that gives you a dedicated number to receive faxes at).
For example, I pay only $1/month for the FAX to email service offered by »onesuite.com (which is primarily a "phone card" company, but also sells an optional fax to email service). And my OneSuite (inbound) FAX (to email) service comes with my own dedicated inbound fax number (I can give out to anyone I want to be able to fax me). So now I get my inbound faxes via my OneSuite service (with its own dedicated phone number), and just use my FAX machine (with my telco voice line) to send the faxes out (and therefore I've set my FAX machine to never answer the phone line). Heck, I've even programmed my FAX machine to list my OneSuite FAX service number as the number I faxed from (so that anyone receiving the fax will also get which number they can fax me back at). |

| reply to caddyroger Get a cheap fax. Most of them know if the line is a fax or not. If not, it lets the phone continue to ring so it goes to the answering machine. The fax should have less rings to answer than the answering machine. -- Some people are like slinkies - not really good for much. But they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs. |

2 edits | reply to caddyroger A Sharp FAX machine I had would do that. It would let the phone/answering machine (or you on that looped through fax phone) answer the call and only sieze the line if it then heard fax tones. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

| reply to caddyroger My old (OLD!) Panasonic fax machine lets us dial *9 to start receiving a call.
So if we answer the phone and it's a fax, we just hit *9 and the fax takes over.
Check to see if yours is the same.
The only downside, of course, is that if we're not home we can't receive faxes. Which isn't a big deal, as we only receive a few faxes per year, if that. -- CheckSite.us | YourIP.US |

| reply to caddyroger I second what others have said about buying a cheap fax that "listens" in on the line and once it hears fax tones, it automatically takes over the line and receives the fax.
An inexpensive Brother IntelliFax machine would be perfect or you can plump down a little more cash and get an all-in-one printer, fax and scanner. It is lovely to scan in hard documents and be able to fax them. -- God saved me from myself! Thank you, Lord, in the Name of Jesus! |

2 edits | My Canon All-in-one is like that....it doesn't know how to "listen" only for fax tones and answers all calls as faxes. I don't use it to fax. I actually have WinFax Pro (old Symantec prog) and use the Canon to scan docs in as PDFs so I can fax through WinFax. -- God saved me from myself! Thank you, Lord, in the Name of Jesus! |

| Out of curiosity, will these switches automatically detect if a modem (either a dial-up computer modem or the modem inside of a fax machine) which is plugged into the switch initiates an on-line session and disconnect the other devices connected to the switch (and then automatically reconnect the other devices after the modem has hung up)? In most cases, the modem will work much better if it is the only device on the line. Manually disconnecting the other devices is less convenient, plus, there is the risk that someone might forget to reconnect the phone and answering machine afterwards, meaning that calls would be missed. |

| reply to caddyroger My old Panasonic thermal paper fax machine has a mode that does automatic switching. I even have an answering machine connected to it. If it is fax, it will pickup. If it is a voice call, it will pass to answering machine/phone. Works too well and I started getting all junk faxes. Only problem is when people dial with speakerphone on fax machine and then wait for fax tone to press start! |

You would be much better off with a fax machine made overseas. They are much much higher quality than American faxes. |
