[WotLK] LK download/install

LK download screenies

LK download error
Okay, so Thaler See Profile got me a key code for LK (thank you again!), and I went to the official site to get the download... I got to the Universal WoW Client with no issues, and got the download screen as well, however...

When I started the download the first time I was playing WoW (I knew I was probably going to run into issues doing this, but I saw nothing saying I shouldn't play while it downloads - that and I *had* to play ) and it gave me the error in the picture.

So I stopped playing, let it do the hour or so of download, did a few things, came back and it was at ~2 minutes. Of course my eyes were glued to the ole screen waiting for the time to tick down to "completed". But after about 5 minutes of "less than a minute" I gave up, hit Cancel, and started it up again.

However, each time I have started the download again (3 times maybe?) it acts like it hasn't downloaded/installed anything.

I selected "Run" each time, like most downloads suggest and since most downloads continue where you left off if you select Run. Am I doing something wrong here?

Actually, on this one, I suggest actually downloading the installer (InstallWoW.exe) to one of your other folders and running/installing from there. Maybe the installer has some problems running from the Temporary Internet Files directory of IE.

Additionally, don't download the WoW installer files to a temporary folder either. Just make some new folder (say "WoW-WotLK") in your documents/desktop and install the files there. But I'd try the first suggestion before you give my second suggestion a shot.

And one final question, are you a full administrative user on that computer? If it's failing to create the files, it could be for a few reasons:

1. Installer doesn't have the permission rights to download/install to its target folder(s).
2. Not enough free space for the copy.

Could be other reasons, but something's preventing the installer downloader from copying files to where it wants to.

It's not letting me specify where to put the files. I can put InsteallWoW.exe where I want to, but not the files it's downloading.

Still no luck. Well at least now I can get the Warrior to 70 eh?

Just wish I could hop on the Hunter and get some quests saved up - but, since I upgraded to LK, I can't log on and play on this puter.

Were you selecting Run instead of Save on your initial download? That would be the first File Download window you received.

Click on Save instead of Run. This may be your problem. When you select Run you are downloading temporary files to a temp folder, then the installer is trying to execute from that temp data.

So, click on Save to download the full file to your hard disk. After that you should have no problems.

*EDIT* I misread some of AB's post.

Summary, perform the following actions:
1. Create new folder on your desktop named WOWLK or whatever you want.
2. Click on the download link for the wowinstaller.
3. Click on Save
4. It should prompt you where you want to save the file to, navigate to your desktop and find the folder you put on there "WOWLK". Use the "Up One Level" button to reach your desktop (Has an image of a folder with a green arrow pointing up).
5. Click Save and your download should start.

Also note that the "1 minute remaining" isn't always accurate- for whatever the reason the last 1 or 2% seems to take a lot longer. Might want to let it go a while when it shows being nearly complete.

Yup I have the installer saving to a new folder, but I can't get anything to allow me to specify where to download the files to after that.

I've let it run and download for hours on end and still end up with that same error, so I'm not sure what's up.

Hmm...adequate free space on disk? (ie. lots of gigs, trying to install with a bare minimum could throw the install off)

(edit) Another useful resource might actually be the tech support forum on the WoW forums. There's a lot less "NOOB!" juvenile talk, and a lot more troubleshooting.

More than enough free space (58 gigs). Yeah I think I'll try the tech forums, I just hate sifting through what normally is 500 posts just to find something useful.

Thanks for the help though guys!

It sounds almost as if you don't have admin rights over the box, setup as a user with restrictions?

So when you click on Save (in the first box of your screenshot), then it asks you for a destination to save InstallWoW.exe, that part works fine correct?

If you are clicking Save from the very fist box it should be saving that whole file, the InstallWoW.exe. Once that file is completed and done downloading you will install it. There should be no point where you need to specify where those files are going until you are actually performing the installation of the game, then it is normally a predestin path per the installer C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft This installation will be running off the InstallWoW.exe file that is fully downloaded on your PC.

When I see that "Verifing InstallWoW.exe from www.worldof..., Download To: Temporary Folder" that tells me you selected Run instead of Save on your initial box.

Here's the text from a file in my "WoW-LK" folder I created for the "InstallWoW" Application file to be launched from. The file is named "TryWoW" and is a Notepad file (I took my system name out of it, wasn't sure of that should be put out there):

Could the downloaded files somehow be corrupt? Maybe deleting that temporary directory and trying again might fix it?

(edit) Better yet, move that directory somewhere else, then try and run the installer/downloader again.

Good call, I'll try and find that directory when I get back to the room.

I noticed the url link is a steaming install. If you mouse over the link in your status bar you will see this in the URL "streaming-installer" Try doing this Erik. Delete your internet cache and history.

From the Internet Explorer Window go to:
Tools
Internet Options
General Tab - Delete Cookies - Delete Files (and offline content) - Clear History.

After that is done go back to the worldofwarcraft.com website and start the download. Make sure you select Save File instead of Run File.

^ This.

Run file can sometimes bump into permission issues with temporary file folders. By saving the file to somewhere on your desktop/documents/whatever, you eliminate the possibility of the install fubar being because the app was being launched from within IE.

All done with that, and I'll start the d/l later when I go to work and see (I don't want to be running the game as well, and don't want to twiddle my thumbs for an hour and a half waiting), but it seems to be looking exactly the same.

Where are these files going to for the later install though? I don't see them anywhere and I don't even know what files to do a search on to find them.

Since the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Blizzard Entertainment is default download location, here is what you can do to change it:

Start -> Run

Type regedit

browse to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Change the key "CommonFilesDir" to your new path.

(Remember to save the old one, you need to revert the change later)

Restart the PC

Install

Revert the changes in registry. That should do it! Hope this helps!

Not sure I follow this question...

If you are referring to the files we had to clear, those were temporary internet files, cached version of webpages and downloads. These files are sometimes used instead of pulling fresh data from a site. Since we had you clear all of that data when you go to download the InstallWoW.exe now it should pull new data on the file. When you select Save File As it should prompt you to download to a location of your choosing. Before hand it looked as if it was still trying to run the file from the site instead of downloading it, or it could have been running the data from your temporary files, which I believe is corrupt data.

Erik, if all else fails PM your shipping address and I will send you a copy of the installer. You've already spent 6 days on this issue.

*EDIT*
Anony,
I don't think we want Erik playing around in his registry That suggestion may work, but Erik needs to be comfortable playing around in the registry. And even if it does work, we need to make sure he is not "running" it to that location as temporary files.
