Webmail now has adverts?

What is this crap? Now Yahoo/Rogers webmail has inline adverts all over the bloody page...

It simply says: "Recently, Rogers and Yahoo! jointly introduced advertising content to the Rogers Yahoo! Mail service."

This is brutal and as far as I can tell, just started overnight (between Nov.13 and Nov.14) since I use webmail every day.

Of course, 99% of the crappy ads are blocked by judicious entries in my hosts file, but the space on the screen occupied by the messages about the ad not appearing are a huge drag.

I agree with you totally

This is the reply I got

Advertising content is commonly included in other popular mail services
such as 'Hotmail' and 'Gmail'. Rogers and Yahoo! have jointly introduced
advertising content, to the Rogers Yahoo! Mail service.

HOTMAIL AND GMAIL IS FREE

We pay for yahoo e-mail services...

In the main webmail screen, say looking at inbox, you can click on a arrow icon to hide/unhide the advert that appears down the rightmost 25% or so of the screen, but as soon as you DO anything (like open an email or click on 'check mail' or the like) the advert once again encroaches on the screen.

This makes it beyond annoying (maybe Rogers should use that as their new marketing slogan).

first it was dropping everyone's speed by 2mbps ("to allow for network imporvements")

then it was dropping the free hosted web space

then it was dropping usenet ("because of child porn")

then it was throttling

then it was the download cap

now it's putting ads into our email

the slide down the slippery slope continues...

just add this new transgression to the list, which also includes web page injections, and 404 hijacks.

go ahead, make my day...

Yes, I know the futility of complaining about ANYTHING to do with Rogers, but there might be therapeutic value...

I'm not saying it's right, I'm simply pointing out what the story will be when you complain.

Yup ... It's very frustrating. Makes me all the more glad I don't rely on freemail or ISP services.

Wasn't there a similar thing when Rogers first dropped their own webhosting in favour of Geocities or something? They just slapped users on the free, ad infested service. I think after some bitching Rogers subscribers were upgraded to ad-free Geocities accounts.

Correct.

Time for some major complaining.

In all seriousness however I might ask

Who in their correct mind is using their free ISP email account?

Why would you lock yourself into an ISP like that?

Exactly, the other thing you need to consider is that if you cancel your internet with Rogers they will also close your Yahoo Webmail account.

just like there is number portability now, I can see email portability being demanded in the future. Question is when ?

probably not they would have to host your account on there server for as long as you wont it ,there would be to many technical issues to move it to another isp.....they could sell you an email service i guess but why waste time and money just use hotmail, gmail or yahoo's free service ..there not going anywhere anytime soon

That's only if you joined your Yahoo! mail account with your Rogers account when you created it, and even then, the Yahoo! account is recoverable.

I fear what else Rogers has in store for us.

dissappointed

This rude and invasive advertising spam-move by Rogers demonstrates the systemic disregard Rogers has for its customers. They market the rogers-yahoo mail component as part of the service. It is false advertising for Rogers reps to tell us they only provide connectivity. They market a full service not-for-free internet service. It is amazing how much useful screen real estate that one needs to manage messages, has been unilaterally taken from the customer. After all, the customer pays for the screen area and Rogers has taken that space from us with no opportunity to turn it off. I need all of the space I have on the screen to be productive. Rogers reduction in my available work space takes away any reason to use the Rogers package over something like gmail. Now there is no reason to stay with Rogers and every reason to change.

Like Sbrook, I have my own domain, as well as number of Gmail accounts.

My mail provider(amongst other things) also has a great anti-spam system which I CONTROL and can white/blacklist whom I wish

Their attitude is very simple, you are NOT GOING TO GET 10mb ANYWHERE ELSE SO THERE.

I'm on 3web (which at his very moment has slowed down to under 4mb, but I refuse to go to Rogers and DSL will give me MAX 2.5mb(I suspect now that is Bell putting me on a low profile on purpose).

Heck I can't even get 10Mbps with rogers.
