Moreover they're sending you lots of bytes you're paying for (which is another reason I don't like webmail, even when I'm away). |

1 edit | reply to kliles Agreed - this is the most annoying thing ever. I am in webmail all day and losing 1/8 of screen real estate EVERY click is really annoying. I can't go to a single system mail client because with kids I never know which computer is available through the day. 5 minutes in my webmail and I'm ready to punch my screen.
- Switching to another webmail service or getting my own hosting could be done but time consuming and I thought I was already paying money for service that included email without spam - which is what this is isn't it ? Unwanted advertising material literally in your Inbox.
Good point on the bandwidth too, does this count ? If so then shouldn't it get knocked off our usage ?
I'll open a new case every day or 3 - 4 times a day and switch back to classic for now.
EDIT In Classic mail you still get the ads but they are along the top and not as intrusive, a 1/8 scroll sends them up. You cans also start blocking 'blanking' them with various tools. |

| reply to kliles Ugh... I noticed this yesterday when I logged in to check my mail. Like many others on here I'm upset because, ostensibly, part of the (ever increasing, I might add) money I'm paying for my internet is going towards these little value-added services like webmail. I would use a mail client, however it is kinda convenient being able to check my email from any computer.
What's really infuriating is that the ad keeps popping up whenever you switch messages, and it reloads the ad every time you do something in the client. It's distracting, and needling away at my bandwidth cap.
Living in Newfoundland, my only other option is Bell Aliant, which curiously enough has become available in my neighborhood recently. I just wish we had more options here for high-speed, like TekSavvy In my mind it's just switching from one greedy telecom that doesn't care about their customers to another.
A lot of things I sign up for are set up to use my Rogers email address, I think I will be switching to some ISP neutral mail provider like GMail full time soon, as to prevent any difficulty in changing my email address in the future, like say, when I change ISPs in frustration. |

GMail advertisements are unobtrusive text ads. I barely even notice them. |

| Over the weekend I send an email off to Ellen Roseman about this. Just picked up her email now. Apparently others have written her as well. She's followed through with an email asking Rogers to explain the purpose for the advertisements, she waiting a reply, and will write an article either on her blog or in the Toronto Star. |

| reply to kwalish said by kwalish :It's distracting, and needling away at my bandwidth cap. Good point. Excuse me for your saying this, but it warrants being said, as the shit hit the fan when Bell began throttling wholesale customers and customer's left in droves, so, too, the same treatment be given Rogers for this latest action. Every time a page is flipped and pop-up ads appears, it's exactly as Kwalish says, it eating away at your allotted bandwidth usage.
Now consider this, you did not agree to have Rogers and Yahoo! insert advertisements within the interface pages of your premium webmail, nor were you advise of such action. You're within your right to cancel your service without any recourse and move away from Rogers. Give Rogers the same treatment that was given to Bell. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. |

1 edit | I'm curious, if subscriber's to Yahoo!.com and Yahoo!.ca have a premium membership, are they, too, subjected to advertisements within their premium subscription to webmail?

| reply to kliles Well gee, isn't that wonderful? It's just like that premium webmail except... Rogers is making money off me every time I view an email message via their advertising, and annoying the hell out of me with animated ads that won't go away, and using up some of that precious bandwidth they do so want us to conserve. Who exactly thought this was a good idea? It's certainly not making me feel any better about Rogers. In fact I would have to say that it's doing the exact opposite. It's almost as if they've finally become self-aware of the oligarchy they hold with the other telecom corporations in Canada and figured they could stop hiding their contempt for their customers now.
I don't suppose anyone knows of any broadband ISPs in St. John's that aren't Bell Aliant or Rogers? Probably not, but hey, might as well ask. |

| I was soooooooooooo infuriated by these ads. I installed a greasemonkey script and that took care of them on one computer, but I check my email in lots of places.
So long story short... I purchased a Yahoo Pro account dor $20USD per year.
Then I looked at my Rogers bill and cancelled everything I deemed non essential. I cut my bill in half by cancelling extra chanels and my cell phone. I also downgraded to express.
So instead of making tiny bits of money on ads Rogers has now lost half my business.
If everyone does the same we will hit them in the pocketbook and they will reverse their decision quickly.
JOIN IN AND LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD, CALL THEM TO CANCEL SOME SERVICES AND MAKE SURE THE PERSON ON THE LINE UNDERSTANDS WHY YOU DID IT.
Lets keep track who else cancels some or all services. Cut and paste the following and keep adding your name.
1. Kamwest - cut rogers bill in half 2. Next Name 3. Next Name 4. and so on |

You can get yahoo plus for $12 per year. I wonder how loudly we'll need to complain to get Rogers to "comp" that charge? I'm betting their "retention" team is going to be getting quite a few calls.... |

| Ran into my neighbor this evening who, by the way, works in Sales for Rogers.
Approached him on the topic of why Rogers has taken to plastering subscriber's inbox with adverts. His reply, Because they can. And it's a great marketing opportunity for Rogers. Because a few people are complaining doesn't mean that Rogers is going to bring an end to an otherwise lucrative deal.
Sadly, you'll all have to contend with adverts in your Rogers Yahoo! Inbox. |

Yes!!! Everyone get Firefox then get the add-ons Adblock Plus. For the next step also get Greasemonkey+Platypus toolbar. And if you want to go one more also get NoScript. Spend few minutes learning these and you will never see ads on the internet again. Even just using adblock will get rid of most of them. |
