Caller ID on Screen

Anyone hear anything regarding this issue? Is the phone company having a problem with this addition? Caller ID on the TV was always a nice feature with DTV.

Question was brought up the other day in a meeting (yes I am a fios tech), talks of having it available 1st quarter of '09

And just how is it going to show caller id without a phone line addition to the STB's?

Remember, with FiOS, phone calls use the fiber data connection (ip) just like Internet access. Verizon can display caller id information with a coax connection just as other cable companies can. No phone jack is necessary.

Some other cable companies already do this and as indicated above, Verizon has indicated its intention to do the same. Note you will need telephone service from Verizon to take advantage of this feature when it is available; it won't work with other services like Vonage.

the directv caller id feature is actually a relatively low tech feature that is a gimmee since they have the phone line connected to their set tops.

verizon's solution would be ip over the already present moca network.

this feature would likely be part of some fios digital voice (voip) feature set.

regular FiOS phone service is not IP, its POTS.

FiOS Digital Voice is the new voip product - not yet available.

Attached is the TOS for FIOS Digital Voice. Unlimited is $44.95/month, no mention of bundling in the TOS. $9.99/month each additional line.

Too expensive. ATT tried $40, and had to lower the price.

I believe the bundle price will be the same as pots. You prob won't save any money in the bundle by going to Fios digital voice, but you will pick up this new feature and hopefully more.

You will also save on the many taxes they charge for POTS

Unfortunately for those of us with security systems FiOS Voice would probably not be an option. That's going to be annoying if that is the only way to get caller ID via the STB.

Fios voice at the ont is the same as POTS (still has 48-52 volts at demark). Have done plenty of installs with alarm systems and have had no problems.

Even if they go to digital voice (VOIP) it will still convert to POTS at the ONT (the only issue would be if you still have a 610 ONT which will not support the new service)

FiOS caller ID on TV might be like Comcast's...Comcast's phone service (CDV) shows up on our HD boxes without having to plug in a phone line.

Verizon firmware for the STB's have WAY to many bugs to be worrying about adding something like on screen caller ID.
They will add it and it will work great but then the pic might veiw sideways, or have poke-a-dots or only show BOZO or something.

Our caller ID box from GTE still works and can tell us who's calling, or the number the call is from, most of the time.

Now. if Verizon could come up with an onscreen version that would let us view the name and number of who's calling, so we'd know if someone we want to hear from is calling (then mute, or lower the volume of, the TV when we take the call) and automatically zap the annoying telemarketer calls, I'd be willing to put up with a few polka dots.

What does the ONT have to do with caller ID? My phones are on the 610 and caller ID works.

NOOO!!! PLEASE DON'T!

Knowing Verizon, there won't be an option to turn it off!

Phones respond to the caller ID signal sent over the phone wires in your house. The ONT already does that translation/decoding.

In order to display caller ID on your TV screen, there would have to be some bridging done, somewhere (in the ONT or CO), to impress it on the MoCA or video signals delivered to the STBs. They are two separate animals. Also, there would need to be firmware in the STBs to decode the caller ID data and display it as an overlay on the screen.

Frankly, I'd hope they get what is already supposed to be working fixed properly BEFORE they try to add another feature that will (more than likely) impact negatively on some aspect of STB performance.

I was under the impressions that FiOS Voice was a new VOIP product, and not the same as the current Freedom Essentials POTS service (that I currently have via fiber).
