And this is the idea that urks me. What a dumb idea.
I'm just the opposite. I love having my profile on my PC where I can have control of it. I have read horror stories about profiles being lost on their end. At least on my end, I can copy it to another hard drive for safe keeping.

Thought my QReply didn't take so I did it again and now I have a dual post. Sorry about that.

only the consoles are kept online/tied to your cd key, the PC however is kept locally just like in COD4.

I was almost positive the server kept a copy of your rank. Reason being that when the pirated version was leaked, people were talking about how the pirated CD-Key was giving them rank back.
Well, I'm not too sure then. When I installed COD 5, the first thing I did was figure out the new hiding place for the profile so I could make updated copies from time to time.

It sure starts you back at ground zero if you nuke your profile folder.

The COD5 profile folder is in a different location than COD4. You will find it at: C>Users>Name>AppData>Local>Activision>CaDWaW>Players.

If this folder gets damaged or corrupted, you will lose your weapons and stats.

I always copy mine to a second hard drive every few days.
Not true, everything is stored on the server this go around. While there is a copy stored on your machine - The server keeps a copy as well. If you loose yours it is re-downloaded.
How is it re-downloaded? Automatically? As a test, I just deleted my profile, and started a round, and all my guns and perks were gone. I stuck my backup copy in place, and everything was restored.

CoD4 kept MP stats and rankings, guns, etc in a local profile in your file system. This sucked because mine got corrupted one time after my pnkbstrk.sys file caused a bluescreen, and I lost all my guns. Well, I feel it was dumb of Activision to store that kind of data locally anyway. Does anybody know if they changed this in CoD5? If it is now kept on THEIR servers and tied to my CD key I will buy the game.
Yes, it's kept on their servers and tied to your CD-Key.
