[edit] I wouldn't act cool if the renter is responsible for keeping the pool clean and they just shut it off. I would have my lawyer draw up a threating letter.
In the mean time, put a power meter on the pump and you will know exactly how much power it is using.

I'm being cool because our whole nation is stressed financially. Some are at the breaking point.
I'm hoping to work this out civilly. If I have to find a new tenant I will but as with everything in life, turnovers suck.

kudos:1 | I understand -- I also understand that the tenant is currently causing damage to your property! I think the meter is only way to prove to the tenant that the pump isn't the cause of the excess energy usage. Did they provide you with a copy of the energy bill so you could see how much they used or just notify you that they were turning the pump off with their demand that you pay half? |

Pacific Grove, CA | I need to find out if that pump is the right pump for that pool. I think it is. The pool I'm pretty sure is around 22 thousand gallons. It worked fine for me.
I need to see how much juice that pump is consuming. That meter might be a good idea. I hate to spend 150.00 for something I may only use once....but I may have too.
My property management company is having a little trouble figuring this out so that is why I'm getting involved.

kudos:1 | That pool is not 22K gallons. 12K more like it.
I have a 1.5HP Hayward on my 15K pool.
The benefit to having a bigger pump and filter is that you don't need to run it as long and the pump doesn't need to work as hard. |

Without knowing exactly which pump you have it is hard to say. From looking at the owners manuals you are in the area of .55 to .75 "full" and .75 to 1.1 kilowatts "max" Taking the upper number of 1.1 at 6 hours per day would be 6.6 kilowatts per day by 31 days would be a max possible usage of 205 kilowatts. Hopefully you know the electric rates for the area! |

If it's a hard wired device, like most pumps are, just use a clamp meter to measure the number of amps that it's using and then multiply that by the voltage.
You can buy a cheap one for under $20 on ebay.
You can get a new one off of Amazon for around $30.
Check your local hardware store to see if they have them. |
