If it was properly developed then it should be fairly easy to convert. You can't just turn it into a web app, but with a bit of luck you can reuse most of the code and just wrap it into a new interface.
And .NET isn't controversial, some people just don't stand the idea that M$ is doing good things and vi isn't exactly an IDE
