Half Life 10 years old today Nov 19th

Click for full size
Half-Life is a science fiction first-person shooter video game developed by Valve Software and the company's debut product. First released by Sierra Studios on November 19, 1998, the game was also released for the PlayStation 2 on November 14, 2001. Valve, set up by former Microsoft employees, had difficulty finding a publisher, with many believing that the game was "too ambitious". Sierra On-Line eventually signed the game after expressing interest in making a 3D action game. The game had its first major public appearance at the 1997 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Designed for Microsoft Windows, the game uses a heavily modified version of the Quake engine, called GoldSrc.

On its release, critics hailed its overall presentation and numerous scripted sequences, and it won over 51 Game of the Year awards. Its gameplay influenced first-person shooters for years to come, and it has since been regarded as one of the greatest games of all time. As of November 16, 2004, Half-Life has sold eight million copies. As of July 14, 2006, the Half-Life franchise has sold 16 million units. According to GameSpy, Half-Life is the most played online PC game (excluding MMORPGs), ahead of Half-Life 2.

I still remember buying it the first day it hit the shelves and my comment to my wife after playing was "wow what a ride"

This is a pic I did back in the day.
Anyone else remember playing it in 1998 ?

I think I got it in 99, GOTY edition.

I don't want to even think about how many hours I put into that, its mods, and its community...

Being the old fogie that I am, I remember being a part of the (closed) beta testing of the original Half Life. This was back in the days when Sierra had control of the distribution (and beta testing), and Valve wasn't the gaming behemoth that it is now. I'll always look back on that experience with pride, since Half Life was such key title in video game history.

I only wish I could have gotten in on beta-testing HL2 and related games.

I purchased Half Life back in 1999. I remember playing through the whole campaign and what an excellent single player game it was. I thought it was the best thing next to sliced bread!

This was the very first PC game I'd ever camped out to get.

Consequently, HL2 became the first PC game I'd ever preordered.

I remember getting it shortly after it came out. I also had just gotten my first computer...a Gateway...that is still alive...barely.

I've pretty much been playing Half-Life in all its forms non-stop since then. I'll never forget the original deathmatch though. That picture brings back some memories. The Homer and Rat models specifically.

P.S. That picture reminds me of a lot of the screenshot of the days that used to be on PlanetHalfLife.com

I was a late comer to HL - I got it only a year or 2 before HL2 was released.

The one thing that stood out to me about this game was during the initial training course. Using the Jump + Crouch key combination to leap farther and also get into tiny spaces like a drainage-pipe was pretty unique, I thought.

I remember the intro the most... what an enthralling entrance to one of the greatest game franchises ever.

It was one of the first ones to have a story - I did not like Wolffenstein and Doom because they had no story to it. Valve took the FPS genre and created and entire story on it. Only thing I hated about HL was the space part as I wanted a FPS based on land. It also had so much better AI than any other at the time - those were the 2 things that hooked me onto the game.

Damn I'll have to get me one. I've been wanting to play this game again for a while. I gave up playing after spending weeks trying to blow up the damn baby at the end, I got too pissed off since I refused to cheat.
My other copy got lost in a move or I gave it away I don't remember.

This should run great now on my current system Q6700 with 2GB RAM compared to my P2 300 with 256Mb RAM.

I still have my copy with the box and everything. I remember using its cd-key to create a steam account right before HL2 came out.

I replayed it about 7 times since I got it. I still hate those damn zen levels and the constant hammering of the spacebar.

Hit him enough times that his head pops open, then get up high and hit him directly in the brain. That will do him in.

I have even been able to jump inside his head and whack him with the crowbar to kill him!!
