Very Good Update

The NXE is a great improvement to the console. It makes the entire system feel new. The Netflix streaming works wonderfully (although the HD selection is pretty pathetic), the new avatars are actually pretty slick (I thought I'd hate them), and being able to install games to the hard drive is killer.

The UI as a whole has been dramatically improved and is much, much faster. The media browsing interface (for streaming media from your home media server) screens are lightening fast and are much easier to navigate.

Overall a top notch update from Microsoft. I'm surprised they did so well on their first try.

Do you happen to know any other technical specs that were updated? Before, it wasnt possible to stream MKVs to the xbox using media player. You can convert to AVI, but I have faced numerous problems with codec and audio synching.

If the MKV in question is MPEG1 or MPEG2 then you can very easily change the container.

Ideally, MS and Sony would just add support for the MKV container..

Unfortunately, none of the video codec were updated and I doubt if MS will add anything in that regard. MS wants to lock people into WMV.

I just wish the MP4 support was better or that MS would release a CUDA enabled WMV encoder.

A friend of mine downloading the new update for his Xbox 360 this morning. I didn't have a chance to check it out yet, but certainly mygamercard.net has changed their signature images around to add the avatars Microsoft threw into this update in.

You may want to check out TVersity (»tversity.com). It does an on-the-fly transcoding for the video formats that aren't native to the XBOX.

Its a little heavy on the system requirements but one of the best (free) transcoders for streaming videos to the XBOX...

Unfortunately, real-time transcoding of HD content is not possible, even on the fastest quad core chips. It works great for SD though.

I'm transcoding 720p material with Tversity on a Phenom box, and it works great.

Perhaps I should have clarified my statement and included HD with a quality I'll accept. I was able to get it to transcode around 5-7Mbps, but the picture was grainy as hell. To achieve the quality I want, TVersity couldn't keep up.

For reference, it takes my machine (Q9300 w/ 4GB RAM) 21 hours to transcode a Blu-Ray to WMV with cropping and the filter to clean up the picture from the size decrease.
