[Connectivity] DHCP Renew Disconnects

The modem's DHCP lease time is currently one hour, which I've read means that Comcast is/will be performing maintenance. Every 30 minutes when the modem renews the DHCP lease I get a brief (less than a minute long) disconnect, which means being disconnected from online games and other applications. This has been ongoing for the last 48 hours or so. Is this just something I should expect during maintenance periods or is it a correctable problem?

The problem persists regardless of whether the modem is connected directly to the PC, to the router listed below, or to a spare Linksys BEFSR41. The modem is connected directly to a cable outlet which leads to a box outside of the apartment; a line installed by Comcast due to poor signal quality on the lines which were already present.

First three images are from the modem status pages. The last image is of what shows up every half hour in the router's logs when the disconnects occur.

Location: Tallahassee, FL
Modem: WebSTAR DPC2100R2 (Hardware version 2.1, software version v2.0.2r1256-060303)
Router: Dynex DX-E401 (Firmware 2.00)

I'm having similar problems. I have a Motorola SB5120 and DGL-4100. When I plug a Windows system into the cable modem directly, it gets a 1 hour DHCP lease. I posted about this on the Comcast.net forums as well, and troubleshooting has been inconclusive. I'm tempted to try a different cable modem (DCM-202) but no one locally has one. Maybe I can get one from Comcast. Mine is leased from them anyway.

Since you're on Comcast, I suggest that you not consider the DCM-202, since it will not provide PowerBoost. A Motorola SB5101 would be a better choice.

If you are using a Mac, there could be some issues in changing from a modem with a TI chipset (SB5120/DCM-202) to a Broadcom chipset (most other modems), but these can easily be solved. Details upon request.

(recovered my account info, I'm also muerr above)

Yeah, I saw a lot of postings about DCM-202 not supporting the PowerBoost. I have the Performance Premium WOC (per my bill, it's actually GameInvasion when I signed up) on my account. My config file from the SB5120 I *do* have is "d11_m_sb5120_speedtier_c01.cm". From what I've read there should be a "b" at the end for PowerBoost, IIRC. Either way, speed tests consistently show 15-20M down and 2M up.

I'm leery of the 5101 because of the config cleanup problem Comcast is having, which is all over their forums.

Hopefully a CC engineer will see this thread.

IP leases should renew seamlessly.

Usually modem leases aren't lowered during maintenances however there have been exceptions recently.

One being if the whole CMTS you are on is being migrated to a completely new CMTS. With DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades this has been happening more frequently.

Renewals, depending on your modem type, may or may not be seamless. Some modems hold on to their IP even after their lease is expired while others do not.

I've set my router to Static IP for the time being, which has halted the disconnects.

Under those circumstances, agreed.
