A recommendaton from the pros

I am looking to purchase a DVD burner that can burn Double Layer DVD+R DL discs. I would prefer one that automatically bit sets for you. I have been told that these produce fewer coasters.

As you can tell I do not know much about them. Could you guys possibly recommend one that is preferably under $100 and will get the job done. I am not too concerned about write speed. Although the faster the better for the price I guess. I did some research on the net, but combine inexperience with these drives and the fact that most of the reviews for the drives are 50/50 it makes it hard for me too pick the "right" one. Thank you all so much in advance.

I don't know what that means but...

I have had a Sony DL DVD burner for a couple years now and seemingly every DVD I burn single or dual layer works just fine in my Samsung DVD player.

Any of the DL drives available will work just fine. They are typically in the $25-40 range at newegg.

The bit setting is for burning +R media so that it will appear to be a DVD ROM to a DVD player. That makes them more compatible with older players. It doesn't have anything to do with making coasters. The use of first rate media is essential for avoiding coasters. Read here about media.

*Also, sometimes burn speed can be problematic.
Try the next slower speed if a coster is made.

Practically any new DVD burner will do. The price differences re usually related to features, lightscribe, higher burning speeds, etc. Just look at some of the ones that get good rating on newegg. There are a lot that are SATA now, so make sure what you want, SATA or IDE.

I could be wrong, but I think setting the Book-Type (Bit-Setting) to DVD-ROM is a function of the burning software. I usually use DVD Decrypter to burn Iso's and haven't had any problems with compatibility. Burning coasters is another problem though. Use good Media, keep the Burner's Firmware up to date, burn at a slower speed.

CDFreaks is a pretty good site for info about this type of stuff.

While it is an option in the burning software, it also has to be supported by the burner.

Also, from my experience, this is a non-issue. I've never run into a playback issue that was resolved by Bit-setting. The typical solution is different/better media.

It depends on the DVD Player. I have a PS2 that will not play a DVD+R at all unless it's bit-set to DVD-ROM. The PS2 is really old though.
I also have a Philips 5990 that will play anything, bit-set or not. MCC (good stuff), Ritek, CMC Mag, Ritek all play without problems.

Re: A recommendaton from the pros.......(thats you guys) :)

Thank you for all of the help. The bit set setting the disc to DVD-ROM is exactly why I need it to have that capability. My DVD player is an older one. I found a Sony burner on Newegg and it should be here tomorrow. Thanks for all of the information.
