| D-Link Switch before or after D-Link wireless AP/ router?
-Not getting an answer to any of these questions on the Networking forum. Our wired connections are working fine plugged directly into a basic, unmanaged D-Link 5 port switch, which gets the Internet from a preconfigured, Sympatico (Bell Canada) modem/gateway. When adding a separate D-Link wireless router (to cover a different room), I connected the WAN port to one of the switch ports via a straight through cable. What settings are important for the new router, and will things work okay if attached to a switch this way? The D-Link Wireless can be configured to WPA-PSK, but needs WEP shared key because of older laptops. DHCP - on or off? |

| If you are using a Sympatico device, then it is really acting as a router. Putting another router behind the Sympcatico router isn't really recommended.
The best thing to do is to get a wireless access point and not a wireless router, and plug the access point into the Sympatico device.
You can alternatively ditch the Sympatico device, and use a regular DSL modem and your new wireless router. You would have to set your wireless router up to do your PPPoE authentication (your Sympatico username and password).
If you still want to plug your wireless router into the Sympatico device, then make sure it isn't using the same IP address (ie. 192.168.1.1), but instead try using something like 172.16.0.1 or 10.0.0.1 (these should hopefully be options in your d-link router). -- Nexicom - »www.nexicom.net |
