Switching to TekSavvy, how do I avoid service interruption?

I asked the same question in the Canadian broadband forum, but thought I'd re-ask it here for a more specific response.

I'm looking to switch from my current DSL ISP (Execulink) over to TekSavvy, though I'm concerned about the switch over and service interruption (or worse, losing my DSL indefinitely!). Nothing physical needs to be done for the switch, it's just a matter of billing that changes and I get a new PPPoE user login. The problem is, when I cancel, my current ISP is going to request Bell pull my line card from the DSLAM, even though it's not necessary.

I basically want to know, is there a way to keep them from pulling out my line card so there's no service interruption, or as short an interruption as possible? I'm also REALLY concerned about losing my reserved spot at the CO if they're short on free ports. Should I just cancel Execulink on December 1st, and order TekSavvy to for the same day, also on December 1st? Any tips for switching over as smoothly as possible would be great to hear...!

I could have swore that I responded to this before, but...

You can always overlap service by getting a new dryloop set up before getting rid of the old one. It's the solution of throwing money at the problem.

Not using a dry loop, I still have voice service with Bell (probably should drop that too, but I would prefer to have a landline).

Someone suggested I cancel my services with Execulink a day or two before I active my TekSavvy service. Example: I have my current DSL cancelled December 1st, but order TekSavvy activated on November 30th.

I don't want them pulling my line card or modifying my profile in any way--I've had perfectly stable sync for 6 years, and full rates on fast path (no error correction).

They'd have to provision another port (in other words, what Guspaz said) and another service for the Teksavvy account in order for this to happen. Two ISP's can't share the same port simultaneously.

I know you know, and I know, that the port doesn't need to be physically changed - but it will be, in all likelihood. Your profile may change too, if it's been tweaked in the past - that's just the way it is

There's a process for wholesale DSL adds, removes and changes, and I think it is very unlikely that you'll get an exception made (one of the reasons the five nines telco network is the way it is is due to processes that are rigid - no improvisation allowed). Most users don't experience downtime of any note, but if you don't get sync on the activation date, just call TS, and hopefully it will be fixed quickly. In other words, have the cancellation and activation set up on the same date.

I don't think you'll lose out on a port, since TS would get the word from Bell that the service can't be activated, if you give them enough lead time.

It's dead simple. I just did the same on November 20th (with an extension and 30d notice as per Bell's TOS). Here's how I did it.

What happens is this; there are two portions to your DSL connection. The first part deals with the actual Digital Subscriber Line (DATA) that comes into your demarcation point/into your home. The second part involves credentials for logging in.

In my case, I was moving from Sympatislow (Bell) and you're dealing with a wholesaler (like TSI is). You must explain that you are moving your internet services to another ISP and to not kill the connection on your line. TSI handled this for me.

The next part goes like this: On whatever day you've chosen, your credentials with the original ISP will fail at some point on that day. Your credentials for TSI will be active at some point on that day as well.

In my case, I arrived home at 1630 to find my Sympatislow account still active! I went into the router and changed my login credentials to teksavvy and was connected without issue. I tried to reconnect to my Bell account and it was "locked out" even though it appeared as though I was connected.

My e-mail accounts with Bell are still in the process of being shut down (and made to report "address rejected" to any mail sent).

In short, yes, you should be able to keep both services open and make the move on the same business day. I know of many people who've done this without incident.

You will have to make sure Execulink/TS really co-ordinates it well with Bell though, if you want this to happen - so talk to Teksavvy, they should give you the goods on what you can do.

You can do that but why would you overlap for a month? Seems to make little to no sense - that is unless you can't cancel sooner.

Execulink's billing cycle starts the 1st of every month, so your deactivation date MUST be then (i.e. December 1st, January 1st, February 1st, etc). I spoke to TekSavvy and they said it's best to activate the same day as my deactivation date. There shouldn't be an interruption, but I'll probably still hold my breath.

Don't think you'd need to have a month of overlap, you'd just be paying double for nothing.
