Power source and ground wire (green is the ground) |
One other thing I forgot to mention. The tech did ground the ONT, however the outlet closest to the closet wasnt properly grounded itself. For this reason he had to run the ground and wire for the power source behind my couch to an outlet that was grounded. -- Комитет государственной безопасности

Here is the vent that the fiber was pulled through | It was then run along the moldings | He then drilled into my apartment from the hallway and ran the fiber in | The ONT was installed in a closet |
Ok, so my FIOS install was completed yesterday! It took roughly 6 hours, and there were a few surprises along the way. First, it turns out that for some reason Verizon didnt install a fiber panel in the utility closet on my floor. They did install one on the floor below however, but the tech then needed to pull fiber up a shaft to my location.
After he (VZ tech) ran the fiber from the vent along the molding, he then drilled a hole in the wall (from the hallway) into a closet in my apartment. He then ran the fiber through two interior closets, to a location that he installed the ONT. From there he used the existing coax that was in place to connect to an Actiontek router in my living room. This feeds both my (internal) router as well as the set top box in this room. He installed a splitter, and then used more (existing) coax to feed the set top box in my bedroom.
Before he left I ran some speed tests (wireless), and I was getting around 23Mbps/5.5Mbs so I was very pleased. We had some issues getting the set top box to work with my HD television, however I sorted it all out after he left. Overall I am very happy, my only issue is that I need to learn the location of all my favorite channels! -- Комитет государственной безопасности

| reply to More Fiber said by More Fiber :As indicated earlier in this thread, in a MDU, you might have either of two installation styles. 1) Fiber is run to each unit. You have your own ONT inside your unit. Standard connection to the Actiontec is coax. Ethernet connection is possible. 2) A shared MDU ONT is used. Coax and cat5 is run from the MDU ONT to each unit. In this situation you would have a VDSL modem for your ethernet connection. In either situation, you still need the Actiontec (or other MOCA bridge) for the STBs. The following FAQ should give you a starting point for different possible dual-router configurations. » Verizon Online FiOS FAQ » What are the tradeoffs between the various router configurations Ok so the Verizon guy is here now. It turns out that he is installing an ONT in my apartment. Each floor has a fiber panel in a utility closet, and then he runs fiber from there to the individual apartments. However for some reason they never installed a fiber panel on my floor, so he had to run it through a vent from the floor below. More info to come... -- Комитет государственной безопасности

| reply to darcilicious said by darcilicious :said by wifi4milez :I would need to use their router? Do you mean their 'modem'? The ONT is the "modem"; the *router* is for distributing the data on your LAN via ethernet (computers) and MOCA (set-top boxes). The Actiontec (and now a Westall in some markets) does MOCA -- I don't think any off-the-shelf home routers do. So if you want to use your own router, you put the Actiontec in bridge mode so it can still do the MOCA stuff. Ok got it, I didnt realize the device needed to support MOCA. Hmm, I guess I will just use my router behind theirs then. -- Комитет государственной безопасности

UofMiamiGrad Premium join:2001-02-03 Great Neck, NY | reply to wifi4milez I have my own ONT in my condo unit. Regardless, I use a WRT54G router with Cat 5 from the ONT with the 20/20 package. I have no issues at all and get 20/20 both wired and wirelessly. |

| reply to wifi4milez UPDATE:
Ok, so I am now less than 48 hours away from my install (Saturday between 1pm and 6pm), and I have a few questions. I am getting the 20/5 internet option (I dont think they offer any faster in MDU's due to the way they deliver it) and I have a few routers at home I can use. My current router is an older Linksys BEFSR41, however I also have some WRT54G's and a Netgear WGR614. As I dont want to use the Verizon provided wireless router (I have so many already!), which of mine is better? I have heard that some consumer grade routers cant handle 20Mbps internet connections, is anyone using any of the previously mentioned routers with success? -- Комитет государственной безопасности

VZ CSR: Our what?? Customer: Your new policy. I read about it on a website - actually it was an article cross-posted from another website stating an anonymous tipster from VZ said you would be giving out STBs if we asked for them. VZ CSR: Really?? Customer: Well, not really - we're supposed to whine first before you give them to us. VZ REP: Are you from "Crank Yankers?" Customer: Certainly not. I'm calling about an official Verizon policy that has been published on the internet. Can't you just do your job or do I have to ask for your superior? When I said "months" that was meant to include numbers like 36 as well...
This policy may open another set of floodgates of current customers calling up, very annoyed, and demanding that they (we) get the same deal. Now, if it's just a promo offer for 6 months or a year on the free box(es) that'd be a different story but if this is a forever thing, not such a good PR move for 10^6 other, existing customers who have put up with V's administrative antics during their growing pains.
Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying my FiOS services (particularly now that everything seems reasonably stable). I haven't enjoyed dealing with hobbled CSRs or an air-headed accounting system. I have no plans of calling and biatching about this because I know it'd be like banging my head against a brick wall. But I do also KNOW that there will be thousands that will - can't wait to see what the waiting times will be to get to a phone CSR over the next couple of weeks. -- Never raise your hands to your kids. | reply to Rattler said by Rattler :With all the publicity about that posted around here, that policy will probably disappear soon. Just imagine what the rest of us peons have to say about it since we've been paying the piper for months... Yes, but we've had the service longer than that. Now that Verizon is trying to open the floodgates on getting installs completed, they may be turning the corner from "anything to keep the first-adopters happy" to "whatever, just get it in".
I predict you'll see increasing frequency of less-flexible installs. |
