wifi4milez : Ok, so my FIOS install was completed yesterday! It took roughly 6 hours, and there were a few surprises along the way. First, it turns out that for some reason Verizon didnt install a fiber panel in the utility closet on my floor. They did install one on the floor below however, but the tech then needed to pull fiber up a shaft to my location.

After he (VZ tech) ran the fiber from the vent along the molding, he then drilled a hole in the wall (from the hallway) into a closet in my apartment. He then ran the fiber through two interior closets, to a location that he installed the ONT. From there he used the existing coax that was in place to connect to an Actiontek router in my living room. This feeds both my (internal) router as well as the set top box in this room. He installed a splitter, and then used more (existing) coax to feed the set top box in my bedroom.

Before he left I ran some speed tests (wireless), and I was getting around 23Mbps/5.5Mbs so I was very pleased. We had some issues getting the set top box to work with my HD television, however I sorted it all out after he left. Overall I am very happy, my only issue is that I need to learn the location of all my favorite channels!
--
Комитет государственной безопасности

<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

Here is the vent that the fiber was pulled through

It was then run along the moldings

He then drilled into my apartment from the hallway and ran the fiber in

The ONT was installed in a closet

I am getting the 20/5 internet option (I dont think they offer any faster in MDU's due to the way they deliver it) and I have a few routers at home I can use. My current router is an older Linksys BEFSR41, however I also have some WRT54G's and a Netgear WGR614. As I dont want to use the Verizon provided wireless router (I have so many already!), which of mine is better? I have heard that some consumer grade routers cant handle 20Mbps internet connections, is anyone using any of the previously mentioned routers with success?
--
Комитет государственной безопасности

Can't you just do your job or do I have to ask for your superior?
VZ REP: (muffled voices/laughter heard) Tell you what - my supervisor said if you want free boxes, then you need to get ahold of your anonymous source & have them give them to you. Have a nice day.....(click)

Sometimes FAQ's dont always have what you need, hence my post here.

Most that I have seen are fiber to each apartment. They put an ONT is an out of the way place, possibly a closet, and put the power unit near an outlet.
You can get ethernet or MOCA depending on the tech and your insistence.
The Verizon router is necessary to run the coax through for the channel guides.

UofMiamiGrad : It is either fiber to your unit with your own ONT or you are VDSL. I suggest you doing a search for whatever installation application is being used for your building. Good luck!

[northeast] Just ordered my FIOS!

wifi4milez : I came home from work, and there was a FIOS "tent" set up in my lobby (I live in Manhattan). I walked over to check out what the deal was, and lo and behold they had just completed a building wide FIOS install (there are 300 apartments in my building). Naturally I chatted up the sales guy, and (prepare yourself) I ordered the service! I got 20/5 internet, and every possible channel available on FIOS TV. They gave me a multiroom DVR, as well as a second box for another room. The deal seemed really good, with a total charge (for everything, including all movie and premium channels, as well as the DVR's) of $79.99 per month. I even got $20 off per month for the first 3 months (making it $59.99 per month), so I was happy.

Enough of my rambling, here is my question. What equipment will they provide me with? The sales guy told me it comes with a wireless router, however I dont want it. Does their interface equipment provide a simple RJ45 that I can just connect into my existing network? I dont want to have a VZ controlled piece of equipment managing my network, as I have multiple devices connected and I like to set permissions. Any advice, what should I do to prepare for the install?
--
Комитет государственной безопасности
