This is true and I agree. However as best as I've been able to determine, the router keeps NAT sessions open for very long times (days) with no problems whatsoever. For example I've never seen a disconnected message from a SSH terminal which is open 24/7, and even when I am not receiving incoming calls, I can access the Internet fine (web/SSH/...). There is no need to reboot the router; only to reboot the adapter.

I am using the default factory configuration for the BPG510 - nothing has been changed. So I have:

Obtain WAN configuration dynamically; no PPPoE; no MAC Cloning; DHCP enabled; no static IP; dynamic routing disabled; default reserved ports of 68, 80, 49604, 8000-8019; no filtering; no DMZ; latest firmware (at least that's what Packet8 support tells me), ...

How about putting the BPG510 in WHR-HP-G54's DMZ? Any security risks here?

I would suggest connecting the BPG510 directly to the cable modem, and connect the WHR-HP-G54's WAN port to the BPG510's LAN port. If necessary, forward some ports in the BPG510 to your WHR-HP-G54 router, or point the BPG510's DMZ at the WHR-HP-G54.

Hello,

I've had Packet8 service for a year now. Increasingly (past month or so), I am having problems receiving incoming calls (phone does not ring at all). Every time the solution is to reboot the BPG510, and all is well, sometimes for a few days, but at times only for a few hours (such as today).

My setup:

• Motorola Cable modem (Comcast) connected to router.
• Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router with latest tomato firmware.
• BPG510 adapter connected to router LAN port on one side, and to phone on the other.

This very simple and basic connection had been reliable up until recently (router settings have been all default; nothing has ever changed in phone adapter settings either).

What I would like to know is what to do in the router, and in the BPG510 to make things more reliable and try to troubleshoot this problem.

Should I login to the BPG510 and set a static IP address/DNS for it?

Should I do any port forwarding, or other tweak in the router's tomato firmware?

Any help will be much appreciated.
