| Things to give up if we're capped
First, it would be my family's digital TV (wooping $52+tax saving) Second, it would be our TV itself. Third, give up DSL and move to Cogeco--cable (better than anything...seriously...so much better than Bell or Rogers or Primus for that matter).
what would YOU give up? |

| reply to Yonsil I don't really follow your logic here.
Why would you give up TV if we get a cap on DSL?
I could see 'giving up' on DSL and switching to cable, but what does it have to do with TV? (other than switching away from Bell TV if you have it out of spite) |

| reply to Yonsil I'd give up DSL and go back to 56K. No sense in paying 40 bucks for a cap.
I'd suspect a few whackjobs would go after Rocky if he ever betrayed his customers like that..but the good news is, he wouldn't ever betray his customers like that. So, no worries! |

@teksavvy.com | reply to Yonsil It's not Rocky who would do the betraying it is Bell who is trying to impose caps onto independent ISPs even though they already paid for the bandwidth. Double dipping. |

So if this happens, all of you are just *poof* out of it, done?
I for one would be sticking with TekSavvy. Every other ISP in Canada already imposes ridiculously low caps anyways, so what would change? I would rather support a company that is fighting against the caps and is being forcefully regulated rather than an big ISP that voluntarily caps my connection and supports regulated connections. |

@teksavvy.com | reply to Yonsil YouTube high definition because of minuscule caps and not enough bandwidth to handle the feed because of speed throttling. |

| reply to David_T I somewhat disagree. Every person that does ditch dsl, and states the reason, whether it's throttling, or caps, becomes another piece of evidence against bell and their anti-competitive behavior. I'm pricing out cable services, and it will cost me $20-25/month more to bundle & replace tele/internet (static ip, no caps, no port blocking)/tv. I don't want my ISP to suffer, but I am no longer willing to give bell anymore $$$ through them for anything. The consumer is the real victim here. |

| reply to Yonsil I probably wouldn't ditch anything.
Assuming its 60GB per line for the cap like bell I would just buy another line from teksavvy.
With a single 6meg line I do about 80GB a month, with two I do around 120GB typically, with 3 I would probably only do around 150GB.
I would have a total of 180GB to work with, and even my most bandwidth intensive month so far I only used just under 160GB.
I use my connection for renting movies on my xbox 360 (720P & 480P) from xbox marketplace on a weekly basis. (selection is getting a bit lackluster new movies aren't added often enough) (I wouldn't use the buy option since there infected with microsoft DRM renting is the only time I consider DRM acceptable)
I torrent tv shows when I miss episodes, And I torrent anime (Theres a severe lack of it on microsoft marketplace however I buy series I enjoyed on dvd when I go to anime conventions), Im planing on checking out itunes and investing in a apple tv if the selection is better for tv shows and anime.
I would have liked to use bells movie store... Until those bastards started throttling bit torrent on my teksavvy connection (I still had a bell connection too at that time).
The throttling done by bell is truly not acceptable and its a blatant violation of network neutrality. Caps however I wouldn't be complaining about as much and I wouldn't have canceled all my bell services (just internet). |

| reply to Yonsil Hmm... I'm thinking the Internet altogether but I'm gonna backtrack first and some may be a little OT. Appologies in advance...
Right now, I have an issue paying $75+tax a month for my Cable (and that's Robbers VIP with all of the HD channels - save for TMN - one HD PVR and a second HD Terminal).
My thought was to eliminate cable altogether to save myself $85 after tax, and then spend an extra $10/month for "unlimited" internet with TSI. Even if I have to download the odd TV show that I watch, the HD quality in an MKV container far surpasses what Robbers delivers to my home.
I just ran into a big issue with Hell. I would be "allowed" to keep my grandfathered, uncapped, internet connection with them if I was to pay $54.95 + tax a month(!!). I can have the same thing with TSI for $15/month less, however, Hell couldn't even give me a "match" on that because the plan was no longer in their profile. That gave me an option of "upgrading" (as their CSRs kept calling it) to their "Performance Internet" plan @ 34.95/month (60GB cap) on a contract of MAx 10 @ $41.95 (100GB cap) on a contract. I had 6 meg service on my line with Hell as well so neither of those sounded very inviting - so I say to heck with it and switched to TSI.
If it turns out that I'm going to have a 60GB cap with TSI as a result of Hell's "business plan for making a better internet" then I'm gonna say f**k it and disconnect my net connection, too.
Robbers has CRAP internet service; on the two occasions I tried to switch to them (if even free because Hell had been on strike and screwed up my land line/DSL order on a move), my speeds equaled that of dial-up at best! That and Robbers Customer Service sucks. So given the choice of not being able to use DSL and moving to cable internet, I'm gonna say screw it altogether and not even bother. I just can't see myself moving back to those b*stards, anyhow. |

| reply to Yonsil Considering I'll probably need Peer1 hosting for my future TV channel, and considering I live only a couple of blocks away from the Montreal Peer1 datacenter, I'll probably create my own mini ISP with minimum 10 Mbps up/down speeds and no caps.
Sorry Rocky! |

| reply to milnoc iWeb is far cheaper as far as colo services are concerned, and has Peer1 on-site. Their neutral racks ($399 for a half cab) include a crossconnect to their meet-me room, where you can get a pipe with Peer1.
Or you can just buy into the general mix for what I'd imagine is a significantly lower cost. Or you could even just negotiate with cogent :P |
