Reminder about hot CPUs and dust.

Well, I just decided to reassemble my machine since I replaced the SATA drive and added a card trying to get things right again. While trouble shooting I noticed my CPU temp was 60F (Yikes! no wonder I had a BSOD while encoding)

Anyway, while cleaning and swapping drives I decided to disassemble the CPU fan, and reapply the thermal AS3 (I like to use it up, I seem to remember this one was the best.) After the reassmbly, the temps dropped to 37C (only 27C in Bios) and I wouldn't be surprised if they drop a bit more in the next day or so.

Anyone with heat issues (gaming or encoding brings out the worst) don't forget to really clean out the dust bunnies and reseat the CPU first. As a smoker, I know the dust accumulates fast, especially with forced air heat and AC running most of the year, but I forgot how fast. I will try to do it more than once every time I get a BSOD.

Re: Reminder about hot CPUs and dust.

atleast 3 times a year I take my computer outside and subject it to an air blower. Computers are dust magnets

Our house is very dusty - I just made myself a couple of filters out of an old tshirt for my Antec 900 case - lots of airflow = lots of dust.

I use used dryer sheets. They work quite well.

To the OP, sounds like reseating the heatsink improved the contact between it and the cpu. Unless your HS was baked in dust, I doubt that just dust alone would cause such a change in temperatures. Perhaps the HS wasn't seated well to begin with?

Well, thermal compound seems to degrade over time, as well.

This is especially true if you have a dog or a cat. Their hair gets right into a computer.
