Re: Review of Netgear DGN2000 ADSL/Wireless-N modem/router

matty,

I will need more information to help you.

Have your run the setup CD and followed the instructions for getting the DGN2000 installed correctly and talking through your DSL line to your Internet Service Provider?

Are you trying to perform the setup of the router over a wireless connection instead of direct-connected via ethernet?

GoBG,

With your "hardware mod", how did you thermally connect the heat sinks to the chips?

Does the cover even fit back on after your modification?

Matty,

I think I see your problem.

You have a Speedtouch 330 which is a USB internet "modem". It is kind of hokey because it uses Dial-Up networking instead of Windows conventional networking. (Ref: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpeedTouch_330)

Best advice--get rid of it, but first you'll need to find out the settings to get to your ISP (typically PPPoE) to configure into the Netgear.

Since it appears that you are in the UK, you may need to correspond with another user having the same ISP to find out the settings you will need.

The device that plugs into both the modem and the telephone is called a Z-Filter/Splitter. Keep it. It is needed for the Netgear as well.

Funnily enough I have one of these modem routers all wrapped up and ready to return cos I just can't get it working.

I wanted to give wireless a try cos I have an HTPC in another room in the house and an XBox 360.
It seemed the easy way to get everything on-line if I needed to (also Play sold the DGN2000 in a nicely priced bundle with an n type USB dongle).

I spent an age (and not a small amount of money) on the phone yesterday to a guy and later a woman undoubtedly from the Indian sub-continent with English very definitely not their first language & reading scripts.
Very frustrating and completely useless.

I used the disc that came with the package and could not get on-line - or even into the control panel of the unit!

I am at a complete loss as to why 192.168.0.1 would not work (afaik that isn't even a real internet address and does not rely on an internet connection to connect).

I know my (Aquiss) internet connection is perfectly OK
(I'm using it now) and my trusty old Speedtouch modem has never given me trouble.

Weirdly I found that if I used the Speedtouch modem as usual - but had the router Netgear unit still plugged in with the yellow firewire cable & turned on - I could get into the Netgear control panel.

I tried clearing out all the Speedtouch drivers and starting from fresh......and stupidly followed the call-centre advise to reset my internet settings (all passwords lost etc) it was nothing but a total pointless PITA.

So, I am reluctantly giving up and am just annoyed & baffled by the whole experience.

Use ipconfig to determine your local IP address and subnet mask.

I suspect that your subnet mask prevents you from talking to the Netgear.

Try releasing your DHCP address and re-requesting a new one which may clear the problem.

If not, you may have to manually override your local IP for a while to talk to the router. I found this same problem when I switched from a Speedstream to a 2WIRE and they use different local ip addressing schemes.

Good luck.

Thanks for the new info, rdcinhou3.
I will look into that.

Whilst I was trying to work through these problems with the help-desk I did use run:cmd to ping the 192.168.0.1 address (which appeared to work properly) as well as ipconfig & ipconfig/all.
They didn't seem to think any of the values that came up were unusal.

I should also mention that I did have 4 of the lights on the front panel of the DGN2000 correctly showing green as they should have done
(the power light, the firewire connection number, the wireless indicator and the DSL light).
Unfortunately the internet light was usually either lit but red or unlit.

Any further ideas?

Thanks once again for your help, it's much appreciated.

Here's an additional little bit of info I noted down
(and just found).

You mentioned subnet masks.

My current subnet mask is - 255.255.255.255

My router sunnet mask was - 255.255.255.0

Are those numbers likely to cause a conflict?

You need to have the same subnet mask as your router (i.e. 255.255.255.0.

Having all 255's (that's "FF" in hexadecimal) blocks you from that portion of the network.

Fixing this will probably get you working.

Thanks for that.

Just one question, should I try to reset & change the subnet mask value on my PC or (if I can get back into the router control panel) should I just try to change the value there to the existing value in the PC?

Sorry if I'm sounding dense here but I've never had to deal with this kind of thing before.

Again, thanks in advance for all your help.

Actually forget I asked my friend.

I had another try, disconnected & uninstalled all my Speedtouch stuff, did the ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew and suddenly all my problems had disappeared and I now have my network started, up and running.

Many many thanks.

Now I'm just finding the XBox 360 a PITA to set up.

The XBox doesn't seem to see the router when I scan and the router doesn't seem to spot the XBox when I use the 'add wps client' scan.

I think I'm maybe I'm missing something & confusing myself cos I got my HTPC connected pretty easily.

I don't have an XBox so I can't help you on that end.

Since you "tagged" your help-request to the end of my review thread, there is nil chance that anyone that can help you will read this thread (based on the subject line).

Therefore, I suggest you start a new thread in this or another forum to ask there for help.

Some generic things to try assuming the problem is all at the DGN2000 end:

1. Is the WiFi enabled?

2. Is the WiFi in a mode that the XBox requires (i.e. 802.11b or g)?

3. Is it broadcasting the SSID (for the XBox to see it)?

4. Is there any interference caused by other WiFi on the same channel (neighbors, cordless phones, etc.)?

5. What security have you selected (none, WEP, WPA) and is the XBox configured to match?

Good Luck!

Here's a warning to anyone who wants to use the DGN2000 with Verizon.

Verizon DSL tech support was courteous but 100% unhelpful. I talked to one guy for over an hour trying to get the old Westell Versalink 327W wireless to work. I ended up getting the Netgear DGN2000 since it says "Fully compatible with Verizon" on the box. I talked to Netgear tech support for almost an hour trying to get it to work. (The power light, ethernet light, WIFI light, and DSL light were green and the Internet light was red.) Verizon tech support said that they do not support this modem but everything should be set to automatic (DHCP) and no username or password is necessary. Verizon also said that the MAC address is not important (WRONG!). I finally saw a review on Amazon mentioning Verizon and mentioning a MAC address so I figured out what the Versalink 327W MAC address was and copied that to the Netgear DGN2000. That fixed the internet connection and the light turned green.

It was not a very fun 11 hour day of troubleshooting DSL modems!

The DGN2000 is nothing more than a DG834GT with "N" wireless.

shouldn't be that hard to set up.

I bought the DGN2000 not sure what to think because of the mixed reviews. However I can say I am happy with my purchase. I did have a few issues setting up mainly because the router wouldn't take one of my manual settings. I rang support who were quick to diagnose and after resetting the router and starting fresh, I was up and online in less than 5min. For me the only disappointment is that it doesn't have the capability to add a usb printer or disk which my trusty old Compex NP28G had. I only got the DGN2000 because my ISP modem was crap and unreliable.

Good stuff - combo modem/router that is fast, relatively easy web interface, sleek design.

Bad Stuff - unable to add usb disk shares or printers

This sounds exactly like my experience last week. I spent a total of 6 hours over two days on the phone with both Verizon and Netgear on the line simultaneously, and neither one knew how to set this up properly. Initially I unhooked the old modem and hooked up all the connections on the Netgear; then I put in the Netgear CD and started to follow it until I got to the screen telling me to make sure to have the username/password. That's when I called Verizon/Netgear and my troubles began!

Verizon said I have a DHCP connection so there is no username or password. Netgear insisted they need a username/password, so we tried several other things and of course nothing worked; the Internet light never turned from red to green. So the Netgear guy said I should return the unit because it wasn't working. No one ever mentioned the MAC address. Right now I'm back to square one with my old Westell hooked up, but want to try setting up the DGN2000 again because I'm convinced I can do this even if neither company can help me!

I am a novice at wireless networking and somewhat about computers/hardware in general but I'm trying to learn. I got the MAC address from my current router, but I'm not sure how to copy it to the Netgear. Did you just put in the Netgear CD and then follow the instructions, and somewhere it asked you for the MAC address? Also did you need to disable or release the lease on the DHCP? (I read about doing this on another site, but it's confusing.) Also I've read about bridging the modem if you're using a third party router, but I'm unclear about this because this is a third party modem/router. Did you have to do anything like bridging?
It's clear I'm a newbie, isn't it?

Sorry for all the questions. I just really want to be able to set this up properly and avoid calling Verizon or Netgear again if at all possible. Thanks for any help or guidance you can give.

Can I just ask, I just got this router, loving it with DGTeam firmware! But something is bugging me...

Why does this router have 4 wireless profiles? Am I supposed to set them all up to get maximum wireless performance? Or are they there just to setup different wireless networks?
