Re: per second billing

I see that you are from the UK. Maybe you also should post in the UK forums on this website, as the people may know more of the UK and other European carriers.

Voip.MS does have a London server, though, their rates are very good, and unless you make high numbers of short little calls, 6 second billing sounds great!

Except voip.ms only proxies the RTP streams, so for all you know it goes back to a US gateway to hit the PSTN for UK calls. I suspect that no matter which voip.ms server you pick, for any particular destination the route is identical. If you call a US number, it most likely hits a gateway on the east coast no matter which server you connect up to. If the IP route from their server to the PSTN gateway is better than your direct route to the gateway, then you might have an advantage. Most of the time it just adds latency and another point of problems to the audio path.

In an ideal configuration the soft switch doesn't actually handle anything other than call setup and teardown. The RTP audio should go directly from endpoint to endpoint, and the SIP switch stays the heck out of the way. Of course, NAT throws a wrench in this design which is why many providers proxy RTP traffic through the sip switch.
