2 edits | [TWC] Doing something about TimeWarner Low QoS/Speeds
If you are like me, fed up with TimeWarner low QoS and low speeds, send a complaint like the attached one to the California Attorney General: »ag.ca.gov/contact/complaint_form···cmplt=CL,
Send it your county Districtct attorney's consumer fraud unit,
your City attorney, and
the Federal Communications Commission: »esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm. Sometime may come out of many complaints.
The City of Los Angeles sued TWC. You can read the story in the LA Times: »latimesblogs.latimes.com/technol···sho.html. If Cities and or Counties started suing TimeWarner, their service may start getting better, more reliable.

Manny

LOL!
do not test at the los angeles one as it uses fast TCP so your test is not valid (speedtest.net)
TWC's official speedtest site »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
TWC is slower then my old DSL 3 years ago |

TWC's official speedtest site is not speakeasy. Some TW divisions have official tests and some do not. Generally, TW is too cheap to purchase a good speed test. The best is MySpeed which Oceanic bought for us several years ago. It shows QOS as well as a great deal of detailed information about the health of your connection. But Oceanic didn't like to have pay for a quality speed test so this year they dumped it for a crappy flash test that tells you nothing but the speed. I also think they didn't like their customers knowing the QOS although it was usually, for me at least, around 95-99% most of the time. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. That's MySpeed with the VoIP test added. I'm envious as that is the best test and Oceanic got rid of it this year because it is expensive. I tried testing and it said "working" but evidently it is a closed test to Orange RR users only. I thought since the RDC for Hawaii is there at Orange maybe we could do that test but it doesn't work.
As for Speedtest.net, when I do it San Francisco is recommended, rather than Los Angeles, and I always get 5mbps or above down and close to 1mbps up. Since LA is closer to Hawaii than San Francisco, I assumed there was congestion in LA. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. They include a connections per minute check, which I can't recall seeing on any other speed test. |

| I detest flash tests. They are not good. MySpeed is Java based. Justin's Java based tests are quite superior to the silly Flash tests he also has now that are used just because you can "pretty" them up. I care about accuracy not what it looks like. In fact, the best test of all is OOL's FTP test. That is the one I have used the most over the years I've had broadband.
I would try yours but I don't currently have Flash installed on any computer and I hope to never have it installed again. It is the worst application ever created. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | reply to chelman I just download a fat file from Microsoft (such as a service pack) for download and use my hosted domain to upload a file to.
I have found that the speeds I am able to download from MS, and uploading to my domain, are about the same as speedtest.net, so i see no need to stop using them. -- "We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope. | reply to o0osk said by o0osk :socal doesn't get to use speedtest-01.orange.rr.com dunno why. it shows up in desert cities and san diego though. It works in Hawaii! My earlier problem was a Sun Java problem. Maybe this is why Oceanic didn't buy the test for us again. Maybe they knew we would be able to use Orange's test which is even MORE detailed than the MySpeed Oceanic one was! Maybe I owe Oceanic an apology,..on the other hand maybe we are not supposed to be able to use it and this is just temporary. If I knew the password, I could get in and make a bunch of changes. It accepts my user name but the passwords I tried didn't work. LOL The interface looks more like what should be seen on the admininstrative side not the customer side.
I got great results. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. The stakes are the same: the survival of our Republic". Al Gore, The Assault on Reason |

| reply to chelman Some people still don't get it about the LA fastsoft sever on speedtest.net. People, it will never show a slow download speed, ever. It will always show your max capped download speed even if your connection is dog slow. Fastsoft should not be allowed to host speedtests for this reason. |
|
Mele20 Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI | If that is true, then why am I directed to the San Franciso test? The LA test is conjested and shows slow speeds. The San Franciso one is more accurate. |

| reply to cousintim Here is what their FAQ says about it:
"What is the connection test and how do you measure it? Our connection test is measuring how many connection your local computer can establish to the internet per minute. This results are determined by requesting a very small file from our worldwide server-cluster and analyzing the number of successful connections. This test is especially interesting, because typical websites (e.g. blogs or news pages) nowadays consist out of very many small elements (like pictures or CSS styles). In order to show those websites fast on the screen, it is not only the download speed which is important, but also the response times as well as stability of the internet connection. All these factors are taken into account with this test type."
Higher is better. |

1 edit | reply to chelman One more thing about sending out the letters to govt. officials.... I always grow weary if we have to let our tax dollars fight our subscription fee dollars to get something improved. In the end, both will refill their pockets from our money.
The best way of getting something done is to speak with your wallet, and move to the competition. Things started to get a lot better when people left for DirecTV in some areas and FIOS in other areas last year, and they left in droves.
I realize that there isn't anything faster then Cable, but I have heard some people complain about it being "slower then my old DSL", in which case it would be worth it to switch, especially with u-Verse internet-only options. -- "We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope.
