But I heard that online was pretty solid.
I never played it, though. -- I like my coffee black, just like my metal. |

3 edits | I got it as a free bonus with my PC's graphic card. Getting past the $%#@ SecureROM copy protection (which is one reason I went to the 360), the actual gameplay is a joke. Cheesy linear storyline that you have to follow. Great graphics (especially the PhysX engine performance), but I uninstalled it after 10 minutes. The first skirmish you encounter seems like a shooting gallery at an arcade. I would have uninstalled after 5 minutes, but I wanted to be sure it was really this bad. I only tried the single-player version. Maybe the multi-player version is better.
For reference, I finished Far Cry (original) on the PC, absolutely loved it. It seems like they're borrowing the name to rake in the $$$.
Back to the 360. |

| reply to onebadmofo I wonder why they don't release demos on games that are coming out. They do for some, but not for all. I think it would be a good idea as far as for us gamers, to release a demo version for every game (or at least the hyped games).
That way we, the gamers could be sure on what we would like instead of maybe by passing a game we may like based on reviews from mags, sites, and word of mouth. -- Photoshop these nuts in your mouth.

That's not a fail safe either. Cause some people would be influenced by others to give a bad review, as to not look lame for liking a game the majority DOESN'T like.
And then you'd have the 1 to 5 word reviewers out there typing some shit like...."it was lame", "What he said", "con". That's not a review, it's just kid agreeing with the majority. |

1 edit | reply to onebadmofo I am currently renting this game for my PS3.
A quick background on my gaming preferences and recently played games. Been playing Fallout 3 for the last couple of weeks and really enjoyed that one. I also like that last Elder Scrolls game, but was turned off by the leveled loot and enemies. Fallout 3 mostly addressed this issue for me.
I like open games like GTA IV. I'm the type of person that will spend more time trying to build-up my character in a role playing game than actually completing missions and advancing the story.
That said, my first impression of Far Cry 2 was not very positive. I was used to the VATS system from Fallout 3 and this game seemed to be completely action oriented. I prefer to approach danger in a cautious and stealthy manner. My first attempts at sneaking in this game were nothing like my thief in Morrowind or my gunslinger from Fallout. In FC2, the enemies found me instantly and started attacking from all sides. I almost gave up, but I'm extremely happy that I pressed on a bit more.
The environments in this game are quite pretty, even for the console versions. And the thing is, the environment is completely functional and relevant to this game. I had to approach things differently with FC2 and stealth. In the middle of the day, when an enemy is facing me, if I can easily spot him standing in the weeds with a rifle in his hands, why shouldn't he see me? If I can be hiding behind a rock and hear the enemy's footsteps, why can't he hear mine?
It's difficult to explain, but after a couple of hours, I started getting the hang of being sneaky. I made some changes to how I played, and it has been an absolutely immersive and enjoyable experience. I would try and operate at night. Poor weather is a bonus. I also found that I needed to keep an obstacle between me and the enemy's line of sight. Sometimes I would spend 5 minutes or more scouting a guard camp. Seems boring, and it probably is to a lot of people, but for me it is exciting and a little scary. First you have to find all the guards. Some are chatting with another buddy, others are taking a pee or having a smoke. Others are very alert, and some are catching some z's by a shade tree. How you handle the situation is completely up to you. Go in guns a blazing with loud explosions, snipe each enemy from afar, sneak in and slay them all one by one with a machete or silent pistol, or just take the scenic route and go around them all.
This game has provided me with some very memorable experiences. The best games for me seem to have this quality.
Just some examples:
A mission was to stop a weapons shipment. I was able to take out a guard checkpoint and set up an ambush for the weapons convoy. I parked a couple of jeeps in the middle of the trail to temporarily stop the trucks. Before they arrived, I had shimmied onto the roof of a shack with an old, rusty RPG launcher that I procured in some raid. I could hear the engine of the truck and the escorts in the distance. My plan was to pop up and destroy the weapons truck once they stopped to clear the vehicles blocking their path. The escorts were on high alert and I would not have a lot of time before they opened fire on me with mounted .50 caliber machine guns.
Hiding just out of sight on the other side of the roof, I could hear the convoy come to a screeching halt and the men could be heard talking to one and other and telling each other to keep an eye out for anything unusual. Gathering up my courage, I stood up and aimed the RPG at the cargo truck and immediately caused a ruckus of activity and shouting from below. "There he is!" "Take him out!" "Move!" they shouted as they proceeded to take up arms against yours truly.
I let out my own muffled war cry (it was after midnight), steadied the weapon and "click". What!?!!?? Again, "click". Ahhhhh!!!! My weapon failed! Stupid piece of junk! Luckily I had already planned for a quick escape out the back, but I was supposed to have killed most of the enemy in my rocket attack. Stupid piece of junk! All that careful planning for nothing. I barely escaped with my shirt. Expect the unexpected they always say.
In another dumb move, I crept behind a fort and positioned myself on a hill in the trees with a great opportunity to snipe and move. The only thing that would make it perfect would be to quietly extinguish the lantern in an ammunition depot. I had already taken out the guard that was watching the ammo cache, and taking out the light would make it pitch black on the cloudy night. A storm was brewing.
In keeping with my silent evening, rather than shoot out the lantern, I decided to smash it with my machete. Brilliant I thought; but just as I was congratulating myself, the shattered lantern burst into a small flame and the roaring wind rapidly spread the fire to the dry grass. The whole place went up like a tinder box. As I was sprinting to stay just ahead of the wildfire, I could hear the boxes of ammunition going off like a million firecrackers on New Year's Eve. I felt like such an idiot. Some ninja I'd make.
Anyway, if you give this game some time, and this type of game appeals to you, it can be an awesome experience. The gameplay, be it stealthy or all-out brute force, is very fun. Having to move across a huge map with patrols and guarded checkpoints at every turn can be annoying and tedious. For me, I really enjoy every battle and little skirmish. I love sneaking around at night and having to dive into the bushes when a speeding patrol drives past. When I near a bridge or other guarded location, every fight is different. All of them are fun. There is a lot of repetition, but it's the type of repetition that I like.
For a single player game, it's a great FPS, for both campers and front assaults. |
