[TWC] major lag while using torrent app

I have RR Turbo (15/768) here in NEO.RR.com. Standard HTTP and FTP work just fine, and I regularly get 25-30Mbps down (powerboost) and 730-745Kbps up. I can download anything via HTTP/FTP and hit these speeds and continue to browse unaffected. The problem is, the moment I start up uTorrent to download something, the entire connection slows to a major crawl. Am I missing something here about the BT technology? Is TW perhaps doing this intentionally? I switch off uT and things perk right back up. And it's not simply bandwidth- I can upload a file using HTTP/FTP maxing out the speed yet still browse and multitask just fine. It seems to be specific to BT.

My network is as follows:

TW VoIP modem->server 2003 RRaS->Gig-E LAN

Most home/office type routers only support 512 connections open at any one time, or 512 connections per second. If you have your torrent app configured for more then 500 connections in total, you could cause severe slowdowns on any other protocol.

I don't know about the TW VOIP modem, but it is very likely it is also limited to 512 connections per second.

I would recommend to configure your torrent application to allow for no more then 400 connections TOTAL, and 100 to 200 connections per torrent. (100 if you generally have more then 4 running at a time). In uTorrent you can set these values.

That should still allow you to use bittorrent at decent speeds and not interfere with other protocols.

Let me know if that helped

I changed the values but nothing seems to have improved. I have no hardware router in place, just the RRaS component in 2k3. And the modem doesn't have any user-adjustable parameters for connections.

The same thing happens to my RR Turbo router especially when I am seeding a popular torrent. It's like my router locks up and I have to reboot it. I've learned to only seed one torrent at a time.

Try limiting your upload speed on utorrent to 75KB/s upload, this should make it so you can at least browse

I have the bandwidth set to unlimited DL, 20KBps UL. This used to work just fine before I went 'turbo'. Of course, this was also before TW had implemented powerboost and potentially other 3rd party bandwidth management on their network. I've always had the highest RR tier I could get- I went Extreme the week it debuted (8Mbps/512Kbps) and then it changed to 10/512 before going 'turbo' and more recently getting a power-boost. It seems that my 8/512 connection was doing better

That seems really odd to me, as I always have had no issues running torrents and usually have over 120 running at a time. I have the RR Standard package in my area, recently downgraded to save some cash. Ran torrents fine on both Turbo (15/1)and Standard (8/512). I use a Zyxel X-550 Router.

I'm curious as you said something about Server 2003, are you using the routing functions within that, or using a separate router? I'm curious if the slowdown could in any way be related to Server 2003. I have no idea as I've never tried the routing functions in server versions of windows, and haven't use anything but a router except when I used to have dialup.

it could be related to Server but then why would it have worked so well before? I'm thinking that it's network management on the part of TW that's causing this and it's unethical IMO. I'll probably call them on it tomorrow.

Have you tried hooking the affected pc directly to the modem to see if it's related to server?

I'll have to try that eventually, but it's in another room and not that convenient.

The server could have a TCP/IP protection that allows no more then 10 connections per second, this is something first introduced by XP SP2 and Windows 2003 Server SP1. Server 2008 and Vista also have this feature.

It is usually NOT an issue at all, as the 10 connections per second limit ONLY applies to packets that have been deemed bogus, and most torrent packets are really not bogus. However, with a workstation that routes it's internet through a server, this may or may not be an issue.

Your best bet would be to test directly to the modem indeed. And instead of moving the PC, I would recommend bypassing the server with a LONG CAT5 cable, that saves you from actually having to move the PC.

Have you tried another BT client?

kba4 - For the record I live right down the road from you and I'm having no problem. Multiple devices running off my Linksys DD-WRT box wired and wireless. I've tested Vuze on each and upload just fine.

OK I think I fixed it. I upgraded to uT 1.8 (was using 1.6) but that didn't do much if anything. So I messed around with some of the settings and disabled DHT. This has improved performance and the bandwidth situation, so far at least. I'm going to read up on DHT but it seems to have had a huge impact.

I want this router too, my speed and latency is very high when I consume all my upload speed with FTP uploads.

It's an awesome router, just the newer firmware versions don't like overlapping streamengine rules. This only matters if you want to manually configure it though.

Where can I find the cheapest price for it?

Doesn't the WRT box have packet shaping to help with BT?

DD-WRT is free. There are verious builds depending on the make and model of your router. I suggest you read up on the Wiki over there. A good amount of information.

A list of supported routers can be found here:

DD-WRT does have a pretty advanced Qos built in. Furthermore if you are familiar with Linux you should have no problems adding a few lines of custom code.

kba4 - If you disabled DHT I would be you'd see a performance loss. As I understand it DHT keeps track of the nodes around you and if able will prefer connection to those peers closer to you. This is assuming you are using decentralized tracking. One reason why I didn't see anything is because Vuze uses a different DHT database then any of the other BT clients.

Yeah from what I've been reading it would seem DHT would help, not hurt the situation. Add to that the fact that the system I'm using is in no way weak, it's new last year: Core 2 e4500 2.2GHz with 2GB DDR2 and SATA 3.0Gb/s HDD's. This system is more than adequate for BT. It's a good thing I don't use BT very often, I prefer direct single connections when possible.

I have been experiencing this same issue recently. I just moved to a new house, not far from my old place. At my old place it worked perfectly. I would limit my upload to 90k/sec and everything would work fine. I moved to my new place and it took about a week to get my internet back. I hooked it up and did a speed test right away. It was a perfect 10/1 connection with powerboost so I got about 20 down and 946 up. I started up uTorrent and I started downloading fast but about 20 secs into it everything just started to crawl. My download bounces around from 100k/sec to 800k/sec but most of the time its around 100. My upload will not pass 5k/sec and while it is running pages take forever to load or time out and I have to hit refresh until they do. None of my hardware has changed nor has my software. The second I stop uTorrent everything goes right back to normal. I have tried resetting my modem and router but the same issue keeps coming back. I also tried to use the new uTorrent 1.9 alpha that is supposed to help bypass ISP throttling but it didnt help. I have no idea what is going one but it bugging me. Anyone have any ideas?
