| [VA] What the H*** is going on in fairfax? Third day with speeds below 2mpbs. A LOT of lag while playing Xbox live in early evening...
I have seen a few other post in the fairfax county area with similar issues. Call and they just do the silly troubleshoot my 9 year old can do herself...

| Re: [VA] What the H*** is going on in fairfax? I was one of the posters on the other threads. Speedtest this morning was a healthy 10mbps and netflix was giving me a "highest quality" stream. Tonight I'm down to a pathetic .6 mbps on most speedtests and "basic" (i.e. worst) quality on netflix.
The old adage has always been that cable gets slow during peak times. This has never been my experience. But now I'm really starting to wonder.
Will continue to monitor. Maybe Cox has finally hit the tipping point on its networks? FiOS is coming to our neighborhood soon ... perhaps it will be an option.

Same here in Yorktown. Strange I can get 13M very late at night or very early in the morning. Seems we not only don't get the new HD Channels but do get to enjoy the overloaded nodes!

| I am in Salina, Kansas and am having the EXACT same problem.
If i want to watch a Netflix movie via XBOX at 0600 or 0700, I can watch it in HD, but if I want to watch a movie in the evening (when people normally watch movies) i can't hardly get the poorest resolution.
This has to be a Cox issue.
What can we do? | |

Meh: the MS HD is only 720p while Cox's is 1080i. NetFlix has more titles immediately available, but their overall selection ain't that great. So, why bother?
So you still having sluggishness, too? Unfortunately, the Cox speed test I found is for business customers and requires an ActiveX tool. I use OSX, so I'm kinda boned if I want to see what my speeds within Cox's network are. -- The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell

| Re: [VA] What the H*** is going on in fairfax? Absolutely. The speed test i just ran hit 20 Mbps. I talked to both Netflix and Cox. Netflix said all the cable internet carriers are having trouble with streaming movies. Netflix says DSL customers are having no trouble at all. Cox has admitted to throttling, so I think they are throttling the Netflix sites. They use the same ports for Xbox Live and some Torrent sites. I was told it would be passed farther up the supervisor line at Cox. I've already looked into the availability of DSL at my house. | |

1 edit | Looks to me like the issue just got solved minutes ago. I'm seeing normal routing to speakeasy.net (dc) and full speeds now. Just 10 minutes ago it was still broken and DL speeds to that site were less than 2 Mbit / sec. "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler." - Albert Einstein

Speakeasy.net (dc)... OK Too:

| Is this outage still active? My speeds in Chesapeake have been terrible in the evenings, but seem ok when I get up in the morning. I didn't see anything listed in Network Outages?
I first noticed the slow speeds this past weekend.

| FYI Guys we have discovered that speakeasy.net (Who hosts the speedtest.net sites) has been having issues over the last few days with their east coast testing servers. Currently the only speed/latency issues we are seeing are with sites that traverse the speakeasy network out of the DC area. They (speakeasy.net) are already aware of the issue and are working to resolve this issue. | |

| Re: [VA] What the H*** is going on in fairfax? Thanks for the update. Although I didn't do a lot of digging, it clearly appeared to me that the issues were fairly confined, as I was not seeing slow speeds to most internet targets I was accessing. -- "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler."- Albert Einstein | |

@ucia.gov | Re: [VA] What the H*** is going on in fairfax? Not sure I'd call it "confined" but it is heartening to hear that someone has identified the problem, b/c my connection has been teh suck for days now.

1 edit | They must be having the same problem through NC as well
I tried going through both DC and NC (I'm about in the middle from them) and get the same
I believe it is an overloaded node problem since late at night and early in the mornings I will avg. ~13M down.

| Re: [VA] What the H*** is going on in fairfax? Its not just speakeasy - - this must be Cox since I get nearly the same results from wugnet and testmy.net. The JLabNDT server reports about the same.
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 1.42Mb/s running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 3.74Mb/s The slowest link in the end-to-end path is a 10 Mbps Ethernet subnet Information: Other network traffic is congesting the link

@cox.net | Re: [VA] What the H*** is going on in fairfax? 10mbps is 10mbps whether its fiber or ethernet. 10mbps isn't squat for a routing link. Especially if you're trying to run a speedtest

| Well seeing that the testmy.net servers are located in Downtown Dallas Texas I am not to surprised that they are showing a slower speed. As for the other two I am not failure with them so I rely can't comment on the accuracy of their test's. If you want you can PM me your modems MAC address and I look into from this side and see if their are any other issues. | |

1 edit | Re: [VA] What the H*** is going on in fairfax? Testmy.net may be in TX but during 'non-peak' hours they report excellent download speeds:
Your connection is: 10956 Kbps or 11 Mbps.
JLabNDT (Jefferson Labs - »jlab4.jlab.org:7123/) is located in Newport News, I would expect that to be a reliable test since the site is within 15 miles of my home. Again a non-peak hour test:
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 2.31Mb/s running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 13.25Mb/s The slowest link in the end-to-end path is a 10 Mbps Ethernet subnet
If nothing has changed, later today and tonight I will be lucky to achieve 5M from my 10M package.
I doubt my modem is an issue, there are just too many people sharing a node.
