Just ran these not too long ago and what exactly are they telling me? I know something is up with my line cause I play q3 and was pinging 40-250 to Chicago last night. This has probably been going on the last 6 weeks, very subtly, but last night was unbearable. I'm not getting rampant packetloss but there is definitely issues with ping on level3 in or around NY and Chicago, as tracerts and mrt prove (though not so much tonight).
Anyway, how do I prove my case to Comcast when something that doesn't matter to most goes unnoticed, especially without a dropped connection? What measures should I take besides ruling out all (of my) hardware already, except modem?
Any and all help is appreciated! |

Tech leads in the field think 53dB on the upstream is acceptable.

3 edits | reply to tshirt tracert and pings aren't terrible right now but it's quite noticeable in q3.
1) Phila, PA 19125
2) Everything about using the connection seems fine except, like I said, when I play q3. There is a stutter that is constant, from erratic ping, sometimes reaching 150-200ms when it has been a solid 40-50 for years. There is no packetloss, at least no more than normal. Imagine if you will playing a video game sometimes at 15 fps, then 30, then 60, then 15 again. This is what it feels like though I'm running at a locked constant of 125fps, occasionally dipping 1 or 2 fps. I have demos of the games I played last night and my god is it bad. It didn't seem so terrible while playing but demo playback really shows what's going on. I think I will make an avi though don't know how well it will translate.
EDIT: bah looks like it should at 25fps.
3) Constant, for the past 6 or so weeks. Last night, around 12-1AM, was the worst it has been though. Not exactly peak hours.
4) RCA DCM315 Status Code: Operational Software Version: ST32.0E.16 Software Model: a801 Bootloader: 2.1.4c
5) Modem to WRT54GSv4 (NAT'd, no DHCP, wireless, no broadcast WPA2) running Tomato 1.13. Tried updating to 1.22 but I haven't ever been able to tftp into router. From there, cat6 run up to third floor into Linksys SD2008 gigabit switch. 8 port hub off that for laptop when wired and whatever else I'm messing with. Main machine and 3 servers wired to gigabit switch.
6) Only firewall I use is router and no anti-virus installed. I haven't had a virus in probably 6 years, knock on wood... |

Smokeping results. Haven't touched my connection since my last post as I woke up the following morning with food poisoning. |

1 edit | reply to HARMANE Awesome, new modem when the tech came out on Sunday. Of course nothing wrong but I'm still pinging almost 100ms to chicago and over 80 to nyc and dc at midnight on a Thursday.
A senior tech supposedly will be here again this Sunday...

then you can more easily go one by one testing them |

Q3 screen of lagometer in top right. Don't have Photoshop installed so sorry for not editing. Lagometer explanation from Mr. Carmack himself:
quote: The upper graph (blue/yellow) slides one pixel for every rendered frame. Blue lines below the baseline mean that the frame is interpolating between two valid snapshots. Yellow lines above the baseline mean the frame is extrapolating beyond the latest valid time. The length of the line is proportional to the time.
The lower graph (green/yellow/red) slides one pixel for every received snapshot. By default, snapshots come 20 times a second, so if you are running >20 fps, the top graph will move faster, and vice versa. A red bar means the snapshot was dropped by the network. Green and yellow bars are properly received snapshots, with the height of the bar proportional to the ping. A yellow bar indicates that the previous snapshot was intentionally suppressed to stay under the rate limit.
I occasionally get a red pl spike here and there but that's no big deal. It's the consistent spike in ms. 40ms is about what I should be pinging to Chicago which is were this server is but it flickers upwards of 500ms, this is just were the screen was captured. I get no yellow so no rejected packets, just shitty hops.
On my 3rd modem since November and have had a lead tech out here 3 times. The first time he said it's noise on my line which maintenance will take care of. He also put an attenuator on the drop but it's doing nothing. I'm still getting no more than 7mbit down and paying for 16. Upstream is fine and consistent at 2500-2900mbit. I've tried 3 laptops and multiple desktops, straight into the modem and am getting the same results. Malware is not an issue, hardware is not an issue. Ping I just did while on phone with Comcast and they're telling me nothing is wrong and that it must be on my end. Please.
It's windy as hell in Philly right now and I just got this dandy of a ping:

| reply to HARMANE Well, after yet another tech on Monday and being on the phone for nearly 2 hours last evening, I've gotten Comcast to reduce my bill to $29.99/month for 16/3, though I'm still getting just over 8mbit down on the rare occasion (usually between 4-6). Every tech has said there is an issue but nothing they do fixes it. Line from tap to house was replaced and everything in my house and the same results. I guess I can live with this for a bit but pings are still retarded.
Anyone in NE Philly having an issue like this? |
