[Wired] Cascading Linksys Routers; High Ping on 2nd Router

Hi,

My Linksys WRT54G is connected to my Comcast ISP router.
One of the ET ports is connected to the second Linksys.
When I ping from a system on the second Linksys, the ping
time is dramatically higher - over twice as high.

Perhaps I'm missing something obvious here.

This ends the high-level information. What follows is
the gory details including ping results and a URL from
Linksys about connecting the two Linksys routers.

PC #1 on first Linksys WRT54G that's connected to ISP
router:

c:\>ping www.dslreports.com

Pinging www.dslreports.com [209.123.109.175] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=32 time=48ms TTL=47
Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=32 time=51ms TTL=47

Ping statistics for 209.123.109.175:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 48ms, Maximum = 51ms, Average = 48ms

PC #2 Connected to 2nd Linksys router
Note: I have tested this using two different routers a
BEFSR81 and BEFW11S4 with the same results.

c:\>ping www.dslreports.com

The following Linksys URL explains connecting two
