Internet Connection Settings issue

anon : I'm not sure what has gone on...hope someone can help me.

OS: Vista Home Premium
Hardware: Siemens 4100 DSL modem, Linksys wireless router, Toshiba Satellite (can't remember the exact mode of those)

Laptop locked up Sat night and I had to press/hold power to shutdown. Things went flakey from there - now when I try to do the Java Update I'm told that it cannot run because "the installer cannot proceed with the current Internet Connection Settings." I uninstalled (best as I can, that's also blowing up) the AT&T/Symantec Dashboard since it was outdated - when I go into the control panel to manually remove things, I get a message that the installer has stopped working and it stops the uninstall process. When I try to update my AVG virus definitions I'm told that the connection with the server was reset and then I'm told that I'm not connected to the Internet - when I AM connected to the internet! I'm about ready to chunk this thing through the window and scream!

I've done an AVG scan with the out of date defs - seems to be clean, but I'm not sure how out of date the defs are.

When I look at my internet connection settings - I see nothing. I don't want to mess with it because I'm an applications girl - I don't know hardware or networking! :)

TIA for suggestions.
