| reply to daveinpoway Good Lord...Symantec and McAfee...they're not satisfied enough with hosing up Win machines that they now have to come after us Mac folks.
I'm not sure a virus could actually screw up a machine as badly as they can.

1 edit | reply to daveinpoway ROFLMAO!!!! I knew it was coming sooner or later(I and others have been preaching it for years), just like the HDCP they just snuck into the new laptops....OMG!!!
It was just a matter of time. In other words, I guarantee you that Steve&CO. have found that some MAJOR vulnerability or "hack" is now inevitable.
I own Windows and (macs) OSX so it doesn't matter to me. It's those smugg Apple Fanbois that were preaching OSX will never be compromised that are not gonna know what to do the first time they get bit!!!
This is sooooo frockin' funny!!!!
How much ya wanna bet that activation is next?????? |

"Contrary to popular belief, Macs are not immune to attacking, hacking, and malware. There has been an increase in Mac malware, though it's still negligible compared with Windows malware; but security isn't all about malware. Mac users are no more immune than anyone else from social engineering attacks, and they still need to protect themselves from direct attack either over a network or directly from a console. Furthermore, Macs can carry malware that doesn't affect them, spreading it to friends via e-mail attachments."
When I remember to, I update and run the free ClamXav, but in any case it's always routine when forwarding any and all attachments received from the more populated platform. |

2 edits | reply to daveinpoway I also run clam a few times a week, and advocate its usage over doing nothing at all. I have to admit tho that for some reason, using a resident scanner 24x7 of any type really seems to slow macs alot more than pc's. I suppose it depends on the A/V you're using tho.
I'd love to run avast for mac, if it were only free like the windows version I use is.....
It appears OSX A/V programs are just not quite properly "tuned" at this point(especially for the prices and loss of performance), but lets hope this changes QUICKLY... |

1 edit | said by osxtasy :I'd love to run avast for mac, if it were only free like the windows version I use is..... x2. Avast! is the AV of choice for my pc, and I'd even be willing to install an OS X version on my Mac if its track record would be comparable on OS X as it is on the Win platform.
However, I'm in no hurry to put any AV on my Mac. The Chicken Littles out there are still just making noise without presenting any real, serious threats that would make me really consider such an action. -- "A study in the Washington Post says that women have better verbal skills than men. I'm sure that the names Symanctec and McAfee didn't play a factor in all of this (Lord knows that they are unheard of in the pc world). This was based purely on concerns for their customers. -- "A study in the Washington Post says that women have better verbal skills than men. All I've really seen is people saying that you don't have to worry about spontaneous-infection viruses (i.e., you fire up your mail client or visit the wrong site and find your system jacked up). It's that whole default privilege-separation security model that tends to make UNIX systems difficult to infect.

| reply to daveinpoway I have been using macs for over 12 years and have downloaded almost everything from the internet and have never gotten a virus. I don't use any antivirus, it slows the machine and most likely will conflict with other applications and resources and will crash eventually. I don't plan to use anything an honestly it's a total waste of money to spend in antivirus for mac, let pc owners worry about it. If you have an intel mac with windows install on a second partition that will be a different story. |

The funny part of this is that Microsoft has recently said they would now build AV protection into the OS... so ironic Macs will need a (3rd party) AV app and PC's won't! |

I guess MS finally changed their stance on charging Windows users for their own (however belated) AV solution and decided to actually offer it freely.
I always saw it as an irony that MS would charge their own users for protecting a flawed (or exploited) system that they were responsible for creating.
Kudos to MS for finally 'getting it'. -- "A study in the Washington Post says that women have better verbal skills than men. I just want to say to the authors of that study: Duh." --Conan O'Brien |
