Do I delete the rest from that folder? What are those files anyway?
No! You need those. Don't worry about those. Just post what you have in "hosts" if it's more than one line.
Ok, I see what you are saying. Do i open it up with notepad to see what is in that file?
Yes

Ok I went and checked the "hosts" file.

There is only one entry

127.0.0.1 localhost

But after that there are a tone of entries inserted by spybot search and destroy and guess what? redtube.com is in there.

I assume that is some kind of guaranty/ immunize list list by spybot or something?

What do I do now, remove it from the list and I will be able to access it?

Not that I need to, it's just a matter of being able to if I wanted to, and I am learning about this at the same time.

The hosts files takes a list of host names and lets you assign IP addresses to them.

This overrides the "real" IP address of the site that you'd get from a DNS server.

The first line is just an alias, so you don't have to type 127.0.0.1. You can type "localhost" and have it work. This is the IP address that will always point to the local machine no matter what IP it has.

Programs like SpyBot will put fake entries into this file to effectively block you from using the domain in question. They do this to block sites known to distribute malware and such.

If you remove it from the hosts list, you will be able to access it, but be warned that SpyBot seems to think that redtube distributes malware (spyware/viruses/adware/etc).

Cool, thanks for the explanation, I somewhat understand how it works.

I'll just leave it alone, I don't need to go to redtube, it was more of a matter that I couldn't, even if I wanted to. I don't like the idea that something is blocking my access to a site and I don't know about it.

Now I know why it was blocked and how to access it if I wanted to.

In the future if I can;t access a site, and I know that the site is up and running I'll check that file and see if it's in there as blocked by spybot.

Thanks again for all the help guys.
