I can't set up a network with the Speedstream 4100 modem! I have a Xbox 360 and I'm trying to set up a network with this 5 port ethernet switch I bought. To put it simple, my router won't assign my Xbox an IP adress, Gateway, DNS, and so on. |

| A 4100 + 5-port switch + XBox 360 isn't a functioning network without hacking the 4100. Most people can't handle the complex details of accessing the 4100 CLI to make it handle more router functions than AT&T intended for it to do.
You need to add a router to the the equation mix above (4100 + router + 5-port switch + XBox 360) or replace the switch with a router to have a functioning network. |

| So my assumptions was right I guess. Its pretty lame how the 4100 won't allocate more than one IP adress... Damn, and I don't know jack about hacking.
Does a hub work any better? Those allow different devices to share the same address I think. |

2 edits | reply to Jaykaze To hack the 4100 into a router would be a pretty daunting task involving a lot of time and patience for trial-and-error testing of CLI command combinations. There is no CLI command manual, but I can point to to to the CLI access starting point if you wish.
Switches and hubs should be considered as ethernet jack multipliers in a network. You need a router to be able to properly share your modem with other computers and an Xbox. Each device can have its own private IP and share the public IP.
If you set a static IP on the Xbox to the 192.168.0.2, set a DNS IP of 192.168.0.1, a mask of 255.255.255.0, and the gateway of 192.168.0.1, the Xbox should be able to access the internet with outbound traffic, but no remote site could initiate a connection into the Xbox or even ping it. I don't know about Xboxes, so I can't say if that inbound traffic capability is necessary to play games. It wouldn't be for many online PC games.
This is set up of the 4100 modem as a simple router is based on this FAQ: »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »How to use the standard 5100B as a simple router |

| reply to Jaykaze Every device sold as a home router that I'm aware of has at least a 4-port switch built in. The generic version of the 4100 modem might be considered to be a 1-port router, but it is intended to be sold as a modem.
Switches shuttle traffic between devices on the same LAN subnet.
Routers shuttle traffic between different subnets, e.g. your LAN subnet and those in the internet (WAN), and also have their switch side traffic. |

| reply to Jaykaze That's right. If you had a lot of devices on your LAN (more than four), you can connect one LAN port on a four-port router to one port on your switch and then you would effectively have a router with seven empty ports available to connect computer devices.
Your purchase of the switch would have been just fine IF your 4100 modem had been the generic version and not the AT&T version.
Before you buy a router give the set up I described above a try. If it doesn't work, then you are in the market for a router. |

Most people can't handle the complex details As you posted, the steps are the same for a 4100 as they were for the 5100b. No CLI access is needed. Plus I am not sure that UPnP is available in the SBC/AT&T Firmware.

You cannot Forward Ports though, and that kills using the xBox unless you allow it to be the one exposed device instead of your PC as the FAQ above explains nearer to the end.

| reply to Jaykaze Set up your modem and new Linksys router like this: »/faq/12670 . The router should be set to be a DHCP server for your computer and Xbox if you aren't using static IP addresses on those devices.
Chances are that trying to use the Linksys' set up CD will only cause you problems and that is more Linksys' fault than that of the Speedstream modem. |

The xbox has to be the only device set to automatically obtain its ip address info.
All other devices must have the ip address info set manually using the 192.168.X.X subnet |
