| No heat from heat pump I've only been in this house for 8 months and I am unable to get any heat from the heat pump unless I use the emergency heat setting. If I leave it in standard heat the compressor outside does startup and run but all I get is cold air from the vents, in-fact it almost feels like the A/C is running.
When I flip the thermostat to emergency heat the compressor does not run but the house heats up fine. The A/C worked just fine this past summer.
The heat-pump is only a couple years old and was manufactured by Janitrol as is the thermostat.
Anyone have a suggestion so I don't go broke paying the electric company. I'm fairly handy with a multi-meter.

| Re: No heat from heat pump Out of curiousity, what is the outside temperature at your location? If it's around or below the freezing mark, your heat pump pretty much can't extract any heat from the ambient air and will just blow cold air - and you have to use the supplemental electric heat. | |

To answer your question, yesterday when I tried experimenting with it, it was about 48 outside.
I like it cool and really have not turned the heat on. The basement has baseboard heaters and other than sleeping and cooking I've spend most of the time downstairs. The few chilly nights I've had a fire in the wood stove upstairs. But this week with relatives staying I've resorted to the heat pump for upstairs heating. | |

| Re: No heat from heat pump At 48 degrees, your heat pump should be able to pump out quite nice warm air - at least 5-7 degrees above ambient - so I would suggest calling your favourite HVAC tech and have them come check your system - could be stuck valves and you really are "A/C" instead of "Heat" even though you think you're on "Heat". | |

I don't know where people get this idea. Well, I do, actually. Builders cheap out and put in an undersized heat pump, and then people think that heat pumps don't work. It depends on the heat pump. Mine works to about 22 degrees before the aux heat kicks in. A properly sized heat pump is very efficient. | |

| Re: No heat from heat pump My previous house had a very nice heat pump - it just wouldn't work below 30F - the air was just as cold as ambient - maybe 1 or 2 degrees warmer. It was plenty large enough - the A/C unit could cool the house 10 degrees in an hour, and when the outside ambient temps were 40F or warmer it could heat the house 10 degrees in an hour. | |
