My previous house had a very nice heat pump - it just wouldn't work below 30F - the air was just as cold as ambient - maybe 1 or 2 degrees warmer. It was plenty large enough - the A/C unit could cool the house 10 degrees in an hour, and when the outside ambient temps were 40F or warmer it could heat the house 10 degrees in an hour.
