[modem/router] Westell 327W incorrect address issues.

About 1 November, my port forwarding stopped working. Finally called Verizon, because tech support for my PF software said...

"I noticed something in your settings that is NOT normal.

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 141.153.90.211
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 141.153.90.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

See how your IP address and the DHCP server are significantly different? Normally the first 3 octets match, but you have your computer using some sort of a public IP address and resolving DHCP through your router. This is very odd.

I suspect that this is why we are having a difficult time on your setup. You should contact your ISP and find out why they are doing this. Ask them why your router is passing a public IP address through to your computer."

Verizon tested and said that "the address that Command Prompt was giving us for opening the Modems software is incorrect". They also said that router is passing a *private* IP address through, and that I probably have a faulty LAN card. They suggested that I uninstall & reinstall the card.

In the meantime, no port forwarding.

Anyone have any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.

What software would that be? PF should just be a router function, set up in the 327.

The only way I can think of to get those results using a 327 would be if you have put the 327 in "bridge mode", but forgotten to disable it's DHCP server.

When bridging a Westell modem/router - you need to change the protocol to "bridge"; change the bridge mode to "bridge"; and disable the DHCP server.

edit:
It's also possible that you have a PPPoE type connection to Verizon, and are using PPPoE software on the PC to connect, instead of setting the 327 up to do the PPPoE.
It would help a lot to know which state you are in and what lights are lit on the 327 when you are able to go online.

Software in question is PFConfig, from Portforward.com.

Supposedly this will configure port forwarding automatically, but they are stumped also.

I am in Wheeling, West Virginia, don't think I have it in bridge mode.

Following lights on the 327W...

Power - solid green
E1 - rapidly flashing green
Wireless - solid green
DSL - solid green
Internet - slowly flashing green

Thanks, folks.

access that 327 - point your browser to 192.168.1.1 and use either admin/admin or admin/password
If the firmware has the black&red background, look on the "My Gateway" panel on the left, below the blue globe your connection type and status should be listed. Is it DHCP or PPPoE, and what is the first part of the IP address listed there, if any, and if there is a username listed there is it yours or something else?
If the background is white, click the "status" link from the top nav. menu to see the connection info.
Also, on your PC take a look in Network Connections - what connections are listed there: Broadband, Local Area, and 1394 ?

BTW, those lights appear to be correct.

Bytender: (great handle, by the way)

3354 down/863 up

PPP

User name begins vzewd..9, which is not my user ID. I called VZ on it and they said it was *their* name for me(?)

IP 141.153.90.xxx (However, in the middle column on the page, my IP is 141.153.90.xxx, and underneath in parens it says (192.168.1.xx) This is right under connection type: DMZ Host

Under Network connections is Local Area Connection, New Connection Wizard and Network Setup Wizard, that's it, no 1394.

My setup: DSL to desktop & wife's laptop via ethernet, wireless to my laptop. Long story why, but zero connectivity problems. In any case I am only interested in port forwarding to the desktop.

Many thanks for your time!

Well the desktop appears to be in the DMZ already, meaning all ports are already forwarded to that computer, so additional port forwarding cannot and doesn't need to be done. But the public IP should not be passed through like that.

I would reset that 327, it's confused now - with the power on depress and hold the hidden reset button for 10 to 15 seconds.
Be sure of your Primary Verizon username and password, (same as the primary email), and if you've modified them, the wireless SSID and security key in use before resetting. If they've not been modified the default SSID and WEP key should be printed on a sticker on the bottom of the 327.

Wait a minute, then, (assuming Win XP here) go into the Network Connections (on the PC), right click the Local Area Connection and choose repair - (flushes the ARP and DNS caches, rebuilds TCP and renews the LAN IP). If not XP, reboot the PC. Temporarily turn off any firewalls and disable any pop-up blockers.

Now try to browse - the "walled garden" will pop up asking for your phone number and zip code. Input that and when you get to the what do want to do screen, choose "because I reset my modem" and continue. When asked for your username and password input the Primary username (without the @verizon.net) and corresponding password. The software will set up the pppoe connection in the modem for you.

You could optionally disable the "walled garden" and set up the modem manually if you want - will provide step by step for that if you like.

When that's done, confirm that you can browse successfully, then try running the PFConfig software.
