Re: Lousy speeds on 3.0 plan

Run a Tweak Test as please. Also, go to »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and run one of the Cali tests.

OK, I did that. I'm running Vista, so there wasn't much to do for the tweak results. I followed the FAQ and ended up setting MTU at 1492 (did the ping test first). The speed tests from Speakeasy were about the same. Between 1000 and 1100 on the download side and between 700 and 750 for upload.

Any more ideas folks?

And you ran the test that was farthest from you, right? If not, try it again. Also, let's take a look at the modem stats »192.168.1.1/transtat.htm.

Yes I did. I tried SF and LA, LA, which is further, was a little slower.

Just updated the firmware, and the numbers got slightly better.

Well I think we found your problem. Your downstream margin is so low that it brought down your speeds. Proper sync rate for the downstream should be at 3360. Attenuation shows that your line seems to be short enough to hold the speeds. Looks like the line may have to be cleaned up a little bit. Otherwise, if you have a NID, plug the modem into the test jack in the NID and see if it's able to get the full speed or a better sync rate and plug in the stats. The NID is the access point from the Telco copper plant to the wiring in your home. It's a grey box typically.

Is it inside the house? Near the breaker box somewhere perhaps? That's a long way from my PC if so (2 floors down and another 25 feet or so).

It can be anywhere. It's typically outside of most houses built within I think the 80's or 90's but it can be in the basement. If you can, locate it. If there isn't a NID or a junction anywhere, it wouldn't hurt to try another jack as close as posible to where the main wire enters your home. Since it sounds like you're using a desktop, it wouldn't hurt to find a friend with a laptop that you could use to check some things out.

Might I mention, if you have voice service and if there is any static/cracking/buzzing/humming on the line at all, as well as at the NID if you have one, Verizon Voice repair will need to be called in. Once the noisy line is repaired if you have noise on the voice, the DSL should follow.
