| BEFSX41 v1 cuts out on VOIP calls
I have an older BEFSX41 v1 and I am using a MagicJack and a Cisco 7940 IP Phone behind this router on a DSL connection. Problem is, both cut out so bad cannot maintain a call.
When I put IP info directly in phone and no router, hooked straight to modem, it works great. Same with Magicjack, if I put the static IP info in the laptop LAN adapter and connect directly to DSL modem, no problem. No cutting out.
I even upgraded from FW 1.52.10 to 1.52.15 and still no good.
QUESTION: Is there anything I can do. It is obviously a problem with this particular model router. Are there any particular settings in the router I can change that will improve call quality and stop the cutting out (ex. MTU settings, etc. ) or do I need to get another router? ANy suggestions? If need another router, I need it to have VPN endpoint. Suggestions on brand/model?

| It could be your firmware version. On the SX41, a newer firmware version doesn't necessarily mean a better one. Numerous firmware versions had regressions. In fact, it seemed that almost all versions had regressions of some sort.
Have you ever tried 1.45.7 on your SX41? I would give that version a try before switching to another router. It was the most stable version prior to the the most recent versions and its VPN works well. You also might try minimizing the other settings in the SX41 as much as possible to lessen its load, e.g. any port forwards, SPI, blocking of Java, cookies, or ActiveX, etc. |

| I been hearing that but unfortunately I cannot find that old FW anywhere at all. I even went to driversguide.com and to Linksys ftp site and went all thru there. They had all kinds of other old FW for SX41 but not 1.45.7. Do you know where I can get it? I hate how their stupid upgraders do not allow you to back up the FW you are replacing first.
Also, I found a cause of the cutting out too. When I have the VPN connected to another endpoint even if there is no traffic, the phones cutout. When I turn off the VPN, they work fine. Even if I am on a call on both phones at the same time. I can't believe there would be a BW issue on the VPN because when there is no VPN traffic, I still get great speedtest reports while the VPN connection is alive. Why would the router do this when the VPN is on? Crappy router or...? Conflict with VPN and VOIP packet handling? Crappy FW?

| reply to dzarda Try Flogator's web site for 1.45.7: »befsx41.flogator.org/doku.php?id=stock
As a guess, maybe the VPN has priority internally in router over all other traffic. Even though you aren't sending or receiving over the VPN, there is still occasional tunnel maintenance traffic. |

| reply to dzarda You might want to watch your router's log in case there is anything obvious in there. To use logging, you must enable it first on your router. I do not know much about MagicJack. However I found the following on their FAQ web site. Hope it helps.
Click here and save this upgrade to your desktop. Once the download has completed, double click the upgrade icon on your desktop.
If that does not work:
Please disable any antivirus that may be running on your system and try again.
If you are behind a network/external firewall or router, please open port 5060-5070 UDP. Also make sure that the firewall on your router is disabled. |
