Lucky Beaumont

Seems to me, AT&T chose Beaumont as an experiment to see how metered billing goes over in a market that already has metered billing on competing ISPs so they can compare the results to a market that doesn't have a metered alternative.

Assuming Beaumont's market is more favorable to AT&T, all they've got to do is arrange with their competitors to meter bandwidth as well, they move in, customers have no unmetered choice and everyone winds up on metered plans. All ISPs make more money, and everyone is happy except the customers.

Great. . .

This is where Verizon and even Comcast to a lesser extent are really throwing a wrench into things. Verizon has already came out saying they don't plan to implement caps at this time. And Comcast's 250GB cap is looking awfully good right now.

I'm serviced by both Time Warner and AT&T. Time Warner will have a tougher time moving forward with caps in SoCal when half their territory is also serviced by Verizon. They could enable caps on a zip code basis, but that would be a bit of a marketing nightmare.

Can you say COLLUSION?

Of course it would be illegal for you and I to engage in similar anti-competitive practices.

Must be nice being able to write your own laws for Congress to pass via donation-bearing-lobbyist.

Re: Lucky Beaumont

Verizon's also hedged their position by saying they wouldn't rule out FIOS caps in the future.

Amen to that! They all have their eye toward the future, and generating more revenue as people use the internet more and more to get movies from NetFlix, Blockbuster, Apple, etc, over the internet.

I don't begrudge anyone trying to make a profit, but this definitely should be getting investigated.

True, but I believe Verizon's only doing that so they don't get burned if they put some kind of caps in place down the line.

If people in these areas stop complaining then to ALL these companies will see it as most customers don't mind caps and overage fees. If everyone in the target area doesn't mind caps and overage charges then even Verizon would implement caps just because they can and milk as much money out of the area as possible.

What the most important thing we, as a online community need to do, is have all these test areas with overages have all their users complaining to the companies about these overage charges because in the end even a "generous" cap like comcast's 250GB per month won't be enough for even lite to moderate users as we go into the future. Between buying Games via online distribution, game demo downloads on various platforms, normal usage, netflix online movie rentals, other sites like Hulu and the major network sites, and online game play many people will be paying a whole lot more than their standard flat rate fee if caps with overage fees go into place. In my household a 250GB/month cap might at the moment be enough for myself only, but I am not the only one using the internet connection in my house.

I don't think what's happening in TX is collusion. This is preemptive for what the ISP's are expected to do in other markets, as soon as they can figure out how to market sludge as caviar.
