Where do I post a question about DTV and Antennas?

Here's my question:

An elderly acquaintance of my wife lives below the poverty line but has an old TV and rabbit ears. We're buying her a converter but do I have to consider getting her a new indoor antenna? If so, what is recommended? She lives about 45 miles from Philadelphia.

Where do I post this?

Thanks.

My guess, off the top of my head, would be in General Questions. A lot more exposure there than here.

I have not heard, on any of the PSA spots on TV, that any kind of new antenna is req'd to use the digital converter boxes. An upgrade might enhance reception, though.

This has been discussed pretty heavily in the Cable and Satellite TV forum.

I did find this:

quote:
Will I need a special antenna to receive DTV over-the-air?

In general, dependable reception of over-the-air digital TV programming will require the same type of signal reception equipment that currently works to provide good quality reception of analog TV programming. If you need a roof-top antenna to receive analog TV broadcasts, the same antenna generally will work to receive digital TV broadcasts. You should not have to purchase new antennas that are marketed as “digital ready” or “HD ready.”

It looks like I will need two coax-to-twin-lead adapters.

Thanks for the inputs.

also, pay attention if you do buy the hyped up "digital" antennas. they are mostly UHF only. many stations in my area are on UHF for now, but Feb 17th will switch back to VHF for digital. this is going to make some folks mad when their new high dollar special antenna no longer picks up channel X!

Thanks for the warning, but I won't be buying a new antenna -- assuming everything I've read is correct!

I found a few threads about it there, so I'll move it there.

Common misconception.
with digital its either "ALL or NOTHING" meaning if she has a channel that is "snowy but watchable" she most likely just won't get that channel(blank screen)
the upside is channels that do come in "fairly good" will look gorgeous.

An indoor antenna and she's trying to pick up Philly stations ? Does she currently pick up Philly's stations (analog) with an indoor antenna ? If so, I'm really impressed !

Try it with the original antenna first and see how it is.

Interesting.

The only issue I have is he completely misrepresents what's going on when he says:

quote:
In fact, the FCC is mandating that all local stations switch over to High Definition Television by the end of 2008
** sigh **

The Digital Transition of February 2009 DOES NOT EQUAL High Definition.

I checked with my wife: she definitely gets at least one Philly network station with her indoor antenna!

I've noticed quite a bit of online hyperbole regarding the digital transition.

I try to verify the info I post on my OTA DTV site with *at least* 2 sources before I add it to my content.
